Oh Dear - Cat Problem (or is it?)
« on: 08 October 2011, 03:07:52 »

Just about to get my GLS on the road (been SORN for a while) Managed to break into the bonnet as the cable had gone tight, boost pack on battery, waited 3 mins and turned the key (sounded like the boost pack was flat after 1 turn of starter).  Reset the clamps, 1 more turn of the key and sparks straight into life not missing a beat., well that the good news.

The bad news, The Elite has just had to have a new battery, the old one was a brand new Vx Go fitted 3 years and 2 months ago and only a total of 9000 miles.

New front tyres had been fitted as I bought it, the O/S has just gone on the inside.  (allthough it passed the MOT 2 months ago)

Car had got a very ocasional miss on tick over and hard acelartion from low revs to ablout 3k,but put this down to the current oil leak (maybe from rocker cover into plug hole) but not concerned as with GLS going on road then Elite was getting a full service etc etc

Nipped out earlier, car didnt miss a beat, warmed up slowly as usual, off through the village, downhill to the next village main juntion, a grand total of 1.8 miles, waited for a gap in traffic and set off as normal - but the was no power with the car and just would not pick up at all.

Nipped to my mates, funny smell from drivers side of engine, and seemed to be running constantly on 5 cylinders.

Heard that when the cats fail there is a smell of rotten eggs, could this be the case with mine?

Would it lose 80% power but run gently on low revs?

Could it be an electrical fault (Will be checking / testing on sunday) or a Lamda sensor isue. ?

and the main question, will I be doing any harm to the engine by driving it to go get it sorted on Sunday?

T.I.A.  :y

Point add, MOT was done recently, failed on back box, I ordered on off the net, when the MOT garage fitted it they then informed me the 2 x centre pipes were too corroded so had to buy 2 parts and fitting kit supplied by them (was well peed off), then found out they welded the new exhaust to the cats.  :-X >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

when i had new cat fitted it smelt off rotton eggs, but went after a few miles, can be just from beeing stud for awile i think. drove an BMW other day that had not been used for 6years just sat in a garage never turn'd over, had to put new battery on it. started fine. had it in for test and pasted but on the test just after he passed it fould up. bloody cat sensor went and would not allow the engine to start. but lucky garage had one in so working again.

unburned fuel and cats dont mix well, so I wouldnt want to be driving it too far.
That said, it maybe needs a spanking to clean it out.
plug wells clear? or full of oil? or even water as its been stood?

If a garage welded my new exhaust system to the cats I would be insisting they pay for a whole new system - including a pair of cats. Thats bodgemanship of the highest order imo.Couldnt be arsed to dril the old studs out. ;)

The car with the cat problem is my daily driver (Elite)

The other car, (GLS) once the brakes are cleamed and checked and the corroded exhaust is changed I reckon will fly though a test and be back on the road.
