it has only one coil pak that runs in the centre of the rocker cover and it feeds all the cylinders

think you may have a misalligine -alligined engine, means when cam was made it was out of line have heard( ford had some) that there was a few made this way and fixed before testing, you will need to alline it by hand with plugs out and piston at TDC and the cam covers of and check the right vales are in right position. asked at vauxhall and said that there was a mistake in manufacturing. had some on vectras and others, can replace the cam and will be in line.

Freecall666 might be on to something.

It seems very odd that the engine was running well with one cam apparently 2 teeth out before the old belt was taken off.

A manufacturing defect that blatant would be unusual but not impossible.

The other possibilities are that the locating peg in the end of the cam is missing or damaged and sprocket is misaligned OR the mark on the belt cover is not what it appears.

The test for misalignment would be to use a protractor on the end of the crank and a dial gauge on the top of a valve follower to check when the valves are opening & closing.

Another possibility is that the cam sprocket was aligned using the wrong slot in the nose. One is used if the sprocket is used on the exhaust camshaft, the other if it is used on the inlet.

Maybe.

The OP doesn't need to take the pulley off the camshaft though so I don't know if the locating slots will be visible.

What should be visible are the words 'inlet' or 'exhaust' by the timing marks though........
