Opinions sought on Astra on ebay please.
« on: 29 February 2012, 10:53:03 »

My son is looking to buy his second car. He likes this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330693147873?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 I am not sure, it looks ok, but all the egine changes and headwork for a car of that mileage is making me nervous.

Any opinions please, good or bad appreciated. I think it is the wrong car for him, but like most youngsters it has the shiny bits and he is all over it like a rash.

Thank You.

The mileage is low for a car of it's age, but you're right.. it's history stands out as unusual.

A recon engine at 54000 miles after 20,000 miles without a service in one year (hmm!). Back to 'normal' mileage until 2007 and from then on it's done very little mileage; 20,000 miles in seven years including a headgasket change a year ago?

Walk away, IMHO.

He needs to check it is on the UKLPG register to be sure the conversion is registered correctly. He may well be restricted on who will insure it too.

Other than that it seems OK, but I'd want to look it over before committing ;)

he claims many services , so good idea to ask for receipts..

2.0 astras have plenty of power and fast even without mods.. so warn him..

and if you decide to buy

and also check tire to bumper gap distances (will show car had an accident or not), check exhaust system , door gaps for being equal,  paint for sanding scratches, paint dust , color shades (they will be easily visible in a sunny day from 20-30 cms)

tire brand, production date , threads and softness (as they are not cheap)..
