Very worried some advice please
« on: 01 March 2012, 19:01:52 »

Good evening everybody, had a bit of a scare this morning. On the way to work it was getting very fogy, for the last 4 miles on the m6 i turned my fog lights on.I have to add i have not used them for well over 12 months, pulled up at work. There was a smell of burning and smoke, coming from the drivers side vent.I turned the fog lights off and the smoke stop ed,is this what caused it.Or something else,i know its said use it or loose it.But its really worrying me,i have had a look behind the switches cant see any problems(burning ect).If it is this is there a fuse i can pull to disconnect it,drove home tonight no problems.I hope this is not a power sounder problem, any advice most welcome. Thanks a very worried Moggy :o.

It may not be this but remove the power sounder!

Several have gone up in smoke and taken the car with them.

..or did you mean the vent inside the car? If so, check the headlight switch and the wiring around it. Could be the contacts have gone high resistance and caused some heating.

Hi Kevin, thanks for the reply.Yes it looked like the smoke was coming from the vent inside the car drivers side. But on the way home i had to use my headlights and no problem,if it was the power sounder.Would i have smoke in the cabin :-\,also is there a fuse for the fog lights. :y Moggy

Smoke from the powersounder could possibly come through the vent near the headlight switch.
Fuse for foglights will also have other things on the circuit,so might not be feasible to pull it.Im sure theres details of fuse circuits somewhere.FAQ possibly ?

Thanks Albs,i don't know what other circuits are on the fog lights fuse.I will try to find out,but maybe its a warning about the power sounder :-\ :y Moggy :y

Wondering if the extra load on the alternator could cause ill effects. Vaguely remember a previous car doing similar, might have been my old GTE.

Wasn't this a problem in the early days when people were towing.  :-\  No idea why it would overload when flying solo though.  :-\

Hi Rob,thanks for that.BTW,as you are one of the most knowledgeable guys on the forum. Can i ask you a few questions.Firstly is it possible to pull out the switches,on the fog lights main light switch and front fogs switch. To physically see the wires also should i change the alternator, and should i disconnect the power sounder as a matter of cause.Your advice would be most welcome,Regards Dean :y

Its part of the alarm system that located under the scuttle drivers side and when it goes faulty has a habbit of setting the car alight ::)

Doubt that very much. ;D Pics showing switch disassembled below. Doesn`t hurt to disconnect & remove PS as a precaution. Highly unlikely to be alternator, can always check outputs as per guide http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90619.0.
Here`s the pics, as you can see fog bank can be removed, no wires as such in switch body, bulb illuminates lower icons through light guides, small LED at top of PCB illuminates the top icons
