Looking for First Omega - Advice Plz
« on: 02 March 2012, 13:12:15 »

Hi,

I am looking at getting an Omega 2.2dti estate, Facelift model.

Is there any thing I should look out for when viewing? Common problems, cambelt changes etc?
There seems to be a lot of high milers on fleabay at least, and wondered if these would be any good if they've been serviced well?

Also, what kind of milage will I get out of a 2.2dti? I currently have a 1.4hdi 307 which gives me about 160/180miles on £20 of diesel. Not sure what the MPG on it is sorry!!

Last one for now; How much would the tax be? I'm only paying £30 a year at the moment!

Thanks

A friend of mine gets between 5 & 700 miles from his manual diseasel depending on driving conditions (lower end around town, upper on long cruises at 60mph) - but bear in mind a tank is around £100 now, so it's somewhat less than you're getting out of the 307..

Tax is band J IIRC, so £245.00 per year.

Make sure you know which lights should come on on the panel with the ignition on but the engine not started .. it is not unknown for unscrupulous sellers to remove bulbs to hide warnings.

Unfortunately there is no "trick" for the 2.2DTI to enable you to check the codes without a reader, so all you can do is make sure there are no warnings, and no "hidden" warnings ...

imo, general rules work for to miggies also

and also check tire to bumper gap distances (will show car had an accident or not), check exhaust system , door gaps for being equal,  paint for sanding scratches, paint dust , color shades (they will be easily visible in a sunny day from 20-30 cms)

tire brand, production date , threads and softness (as they are not cheap)..

however,

diesels require a bit more attention as their parts are not cheap.. here, second hand diesels are tested for injection pump pressure (requires equipment)..

I'm not diesel fan or expert , however diesel owners  may give better advices..

 :P ;D 500 .. you know what I meant  ;)

FWIW said friend has also barely serviced the car (it tends to get an oil change every .. 30k or so - last time it came out like tar!) and runs it on a mix of diesel and whatever comes to hand (candela oil, old engine oil, cooking oil, meths, paraffin..) - it's basically burning whatever chemicals he'd otherwise take to the tip and aside from a slightly clogged injector (we think) once, has been doing so for 60-70,000 miles without complaint.

I think all he's had to fix in that time has been the HBV (once) and the diesel preheater (bypassed when it started leaking coolant)..

Could anyone send me a pic of what lights should be lit please! That'd be great.
