Added another 6 litres to the stable last night...
« on: 04 March 2012, 12:06:51 »

I thought I'd just post a couple of pics of my new acquisition to be dismantled and turned into something good pride and joy.. Poor fella selling it looked heartbroken when he said "You're not going to break it, are you?" and I replied "Er, can I refuse to answer that?" ;D

Considering her age she drives beautifully - made it all the way back from Rhydlewis in Wales without skipping a beat aside from the fact that the brake lights packed up after 5 minutes (and then started working again 5 minutes from home) and to start it you have to waggle the gear lever (a dickey Park switch).. Oh and the passenger wing mirror only points at the floor & wobbles around.

Plenty of grunt, though, and compared to an Omega autobox (yes, a properly working one ;)) the gearbox is a dream - you really can't tell it's changed gear other than the rev counter dopping back down.

(Borrowed the pics off the eBay auction since it's pouring with rain outside and I don't really want to go and get wet  :-[ )

Oh yes - I'd say the seats in the Omega are more comfortable (though these seem to have sagged a bit and I haven't really adjusted them beyond putting them back far enough that I could get in past the ships wheel), and it's easier to get in & out of an Omega than this.

You do feel a bit like an East London gangster behind the wheel, though .. ;D

They're not on it anymore - the seller put the standard Jag wheels back on it before getting shot..

Pretty much! And it reckons 420 to a tank at 60mph when cruising, which isn't that bad really considering I get ~330 to a tank at 80mph in the Omega.. with half as many cylinders.

Much more fun buying an old barge that that, running it into the ground over say 6 months than running a FWD box.

Yep - I was discussing that with Mark (the guy who gave me the lift to Wales in his 2.2DTi Omega); given the price of the car (£600!) and low cost of insurance (£350 with 0 NCB!) and tax (£118 for 6 months) it's probably cheaper - even with the cost of fuel - to buy a car like this every six months and then scrap it, than it is to buy an expensive, brand new, diesel microcar..

Unless you're doing mega mileage, of course, then the fuel would get a bit eye watering ;D

Close - although I have no use for the engine, actually ;) The diff and front & rear axles, however, will be sitting under a very different shaped bodyshell and attached to a very different chassis :)
