Hi All,

The indicated average fuel consumption has just dropped dramatically on my 2.2 Auto petrol. It normally hovers sround 29mpg but yesterday dropped to 24mpg. I zeroed the reading to make sure.

Anyone have any idea what could cause this? I have a warning light (orange) that my garage says is a lambda sensor failure.

Hi Tex.
As you can image we have alot of members saying they have taken their car to a garage and they say this and that, then actually find out the problem was nothing of the sort.
That said all garages are not rip off merchants, but sadly get tarred with the same brush.
If someone close to you has a code reader maybe a second opinion couls save you a few pounds.

I've got a 3.2 v6 and get 21 mpg on the motorway and 16 around town.  I never put my foot down and am actually quite carefull, always looking at the current mpg to make sure i'm driving as economical as possible.

You have issues there, that's far too low.

My 3.2 does 18 mpg on short runs - 6 miles each way journey. Today on 200 miler up and down M40 averaged 30 overall for trip.

I was also starting to look into revs per minute - between diesel and petrol engines - but the torque vs horsepower theory was getting a bit much for me.

I was observing that the Phaeton (diesel) cruises at high speeds on low revs and returns 37mpg - the Omega is around 25% higher revs to maintain car at same speed.

My 3.2 does 24 around town and 30 at 70mph on the motorway, I think that will do. My 1250 Hilman Avenger many moons ago only did 28 at 60mph ;D

The 1500 automatic I pulled out of my Avenger at the weekend struggled to make 25mpg, and topped out at about 80mph. If I could stand the racket.

I expect the XE that we bolted in it's place to do much better!
