Coolant loss
« on: 07 March 2012, 18:31:25 »

Just a quick confirmation needed please.

Been parking on my drive wrong way round recently, front down the slope instead of the normal front up the slope, and I noticed a wet patch on the drive under engine.
I hadn't got round to checking it out when today the coolant level warning came up, I had a look and have lost just over a litre.

I suspect HBV from what I've read and where the wet patch was on the drive, is there an easy way to spot a leaking HBV i.e. from where can you see it?

Any other likely causes or is HBV the likely candidate?

Ta in advance.
Dave.

Most probably the HBV. Look between front O/S wheel & wing (door end) should be able to see the drips from where bellhousing mates to engine

Or shine a torch into the area where the HBV is while the engine is running and you will probably see it leaking.Worked for me last week. :y

operate the heater through its heat range though. When I last had to replace mine, it leaked if the a/c was ON, but dry with it OFF  :y :y

Agree with eveything people have said above. If you have anti freeze in your car it should made the water leak easier to find as it leave a coloured line as a rule.

Just to explain a little more on what Andy said as I too have seen this alot. The HBV (heater bypass valve) has one pipe one side and two pipes the other (which one is above the other). So lets say the top pipe is for hot, the bottom pipe is closed off whilst the heaters are on hot, so if there is a fault in the bottom pipe the leak won't happen until you turn the heating onto cold.

Not sure by turning your car around however would sort this.

Can you smell a sweet smell when the car is warm?

If you live near someone that could pressurise your coolant system the leak would show itself.
