Taking a break
« on: 13 March 2012, 09:17:42 »

After 16 months the cracks are finally starting to appear, so yesterday I decided to take an extra large dose of >these< and get on a train to Leicester to spend some time with my daughter & grandkids.
Would have took the car but snapping a rear coil spring has put paid to that until the end of the month at least, so took it up the jacksey instead to the tune of £63 for the train fare.

Barons BMW in Farnborough can kiss my ar$e if they think I'm paying £320 for a pair of springs, I found a set of 4 from Eibach (which is what M-Tech use anyway) for £120 delivered. Will still have to find a set of spring compressors and someone who wants to do the job as even a simple 5 minute walk has me breathing heavily these days, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Take care for now all.

i'm sure the gang will help out with the springs....      i'm not really able to do much right now, but happy to stand around making tea (would bring a kettle.... i've seen the pictures of yours.....   :D )  and passing spanners....  and bring axle stands and trolley jacks if required....

Enjoy the change of scenery and pace Martian, but if your Grandkids are like mine you'll come back more knackered than when you left ;D You'll feel a hell of a lot better for it though :y  :)

If you can scrounge up someone who knows more or less how to do the job and just need loan of tools/facilities then you're more than welcome to come over and use & abuse mine (I have spring compressors, etc etc).. I'm just a bit hesitant having never touched a BMW beyond driving one sideways ;D

I have some compressors you can borrow but not sure how much time I am going to have over the few weeks if you understand.
I won't be getting the springs until the end of the month at least due to financial constraints (my savings have now truly run out and £90 a week off the state doesn't quite cut it)
If you are happy with me borrowing them while you are away, I can either drop them back to your good lady or hold on to them until your return if that's ok with you? (I can guarantee you will still have them either way).

i'm not really able to do much right now, but happy to stand around making tea (would bring a kettle.... i've seen the pictures of yours.....   :D )
That kettle is safe as houses once you know what not to touch  ;D

But can you not do a similar diff drop as per the Omega for rear springs?  :-\
No need to drop the diff on the E36 Tunnie, it's simply a case of get it in the air, remove road wheel, remove shock absorber bottom bolt, get person of large stature to stand on rear wheel hub, and the spring drops out.
I only mentioned spring compressors as the new springs are actually a complete lowering kit (30mm F/20mm R drop on a stock E36, but they will only be a 15mm F/9mm R drop for me as the M-Tech is already 15mm F/11mm R lower than a stock E36 by default).
The fronts are Macpherson struts which are held in place by a single bolt at the bottom and 3 nuts on the top of the inner wing, hence the need for compressors.

If you can scrounge up someone who knows more or less how to do the job and just need loan of tools/facilities then you're more than welcome to come over and use & abuse mine (I have spring compressors, etc etc).. I'm just a bit hesitant having never touched a BMW beyond driving one sideways ;D
That's very generous of you Aaron.
The job itself is a piece of pi$$ and I am more than confident in taking things apart and putting them back together, I'm just lacking in the physical strength department to actually do it due to the chemo.

To everybody else who I haven't quoted above, very many thanks for the offers of assistance.

Now you've described it, it sounds a doddle - you're more than welcome to pop over to shout orders and point at stuff while I do the work. As a bonus, I am also a person of large stature  ;D (and Mac struts are a doddle, having done plenty of 'em :))

I had visions of it being like the 300ZX - you had to take every single plastic boot panel out and then the entire rear 'door' cards before you could get to the top bolts on the rear coilover. A 3" inspection hatch would have made the job so much easier!
