Hi guys, I'm sure someone here knows the answer to this. I inherited a 16Gb iphone 3gs, model MC131B, from my daughter. Recently, abroad on holiday, I tried to use it to receive and send e-mail using the free hotel wifi, and I set it up using the settings detailed in the Plusnet website. It received emails fine, but I could not send, no error messages appeared, it just failed to send any. I tried every kind of account settings, and even cribbed settings from someone else's iphone, but no luck. I used the Apple and Plusnet websites looking for an answer, but according to them I had set it up correctly. Clearly I have missed something so simple they don't even mention it, but what?

Does it work over your wifi at home?

I'm with talktalk and can only usually send emails whilst at home, over my wifi connection. I spent a long time on the phone with Orange at one point trying to set it up, and they set up a second server stating that talktalk was very difficult? Still doesn't work away from home

Oh should have added that I can receive email anywhere, with no issues.

For some reason - probably due to my ignorance - I'm unable to connect to my wifi. It just tells me - 'Unable to connect.' My laptop connects OK, and I'm using the same settings.

No they dont......you will have to setup an account with gmail or the like and set your outgoing mail server settings for gmail. I suggest gmail as its pretty good, as in, you can set it up so outbound mail  'looks' like it came from your plusnet account.....thus avoiding confusion at the receiptants end which account to reply to

Rebooting the router usually cures things when mine plays up like that.

Ahh, that could have been the reason then. I was going to ring Plusnet next anyway. What baffled me is that I was getting inbound msgs.!

There's a reason for that Two different protocols and infrastructures for inbound & outbound.

Your inbound will be arriving over authenticated (i.e. using your username & password) IMAP or POP3 - probably IMAP.
Your outbound will be sent over either authenticated or unauthenticated SMTP. If it's unauthenticated then it'll definitely be locked down to only clients on PlusNet (otherwise anyone could use their servers to send spam) - authenticated and SSL encrypted connections may be allowed from other networks as they are seen as secure.

IMAP = Internet Message Access Protocol
POP3 = Post Office Protocol
SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

Except that any SPF checks will fail (unless you own your own domain, and configure a valid SPF)

Many ISPs allow access to their outgoing SMTP servers on an alternate port (as many ISPs block or redirect outgoing port 25), using authentication. Port 465 is quite a common one.

I think like TD said gmail is the easiest way to go as they are set up to authenticate and send from other providers and have plentiful instruction pages to set up various devices.

Just had a link from Plusnet showing the iphone settings required to use email abroad. However they are exactly what I had set anyway! So back to the drawing board. I still can't access my home wifi so need to sort that out first. It is suggested to use WEP rather than WAP security on my router so will try that when I get a minute.

Thanks very much for all the help so far, as you can tell I am an innocent abroad in these matters.
