trailer and temporary protection from rust
« on: 14 March 2012, 18:48:45 »

As part of my boat project I had to rebuild the trailer.  It's a good solid trailer but built in mild steel.  I was going to get it hot dip galzenised but I have run out of time before I go away for a couple of months.  I will he able to get it done then but in Tue meantime I don't want it to rust away.  Is there anything I can do to reduce the rusting?  It sits outside and there is no cover I can put it under.

I think your options are either paint it (red oxide?), treat it (waxoyl) or set up a sacrificial anode..

Paint the outside and squirt some Waxoyl inside the bits you can't get to. I have a Waxoyl spray lance job if you need one. :y

Not sure I want to paint it as it will have to be removed before the hot dip in June.

Slap old engine oil all over it.That should keep the rust away for a few months. ;)

I think Albs has nailed it there. Good dose of engine oil to prevent rust then plenty of Jizer and jetwashing to remove prior to the galv.

I think I may use something more conventional to clean the oil off though. :o :o ;D

Agreed a dam site easier than trying to remove all the paint proir to galvanizing.
