Tyre Talk
« on: 30 March 2008, 23:21:25 »

I have a 2.5 V6 GLS Auto

1999 V Plate.  Done 62,000

I bought it in August 2006 and have done arround 4000 miles in it since then.

I have Avon ZV3's all round on it.

Most mileage is local town/village drivng returning 18/22 mpg depending on my mood.

A run out for me is from Rotherham to Mansfield (Outskirts) and the best MPG I have seen was 33 Mpg

Reading the talk on Costco/Nitrogem/Michein tyres  I was wondering what members thoughts on Price/Value/Performance were and which tyres suited the Omega best.

The reason I ask is that I am thinking of selling the GLS and going for an Elite and the main worry is going for a different tyre to the Avon but ending up with something that develops any road noise/hum.  Plus returning worse fuel consumption verses performance.

The Avons seem to do a decent job, good in the wet etc

Value any feedback from members.

Must admit I liked the look of them the most from all the tyre choices, certainlt not disapointed with them.

Interestingly, we were talking tyres last Friday when having the geometry set.

I have used Contis in the past and they have been excellent but, due to current tyre prices, switched to a set of Dunlop SP9000's which also seem very good.

The guy who runs the geometry place also does tyres and Matchless has a set of Avons on his. We all concluded that whilst reasonably priced, they dont wear well and loose grip when just below the half wear point which is not good.

The chap recommended some Kumhos which were reasonably priced (on a par with Avons) for big motors (he runs a Lexus) as they wear well, give good grip, dont tend to tram line and being a silica compound are pretty quiet.

As you know, I tend to run SP9000s on the MV6 (got contis on front at moment), my biggest complaint is road noise with them (though, it is 235 LP so that wont help).  Good grip wet and dry, never got stuck in that snow when the rest of the area all got bogged down.  Decent stopping ability, and it goes round corners well.  Obviously with the MV6, easy to get back end spinning from standing start, esp if wet.

I have/had Avon ZZ3s on back of the tractor.  One side lasted 4k, any whilst still borderline legal, is right at the end of its life.  I've been unimpressed with ZZ3s - grip and durability are below what I had expected.

you lot don't like my 'plastic' tyres.

I like them though  :)

Goodyear Venture's done 25k on them, and still have 6mm on the back & 7mm on the front  :)

Sorry Tunnie, I make 3 demands of my tyres:

Left pedal - I want to stop right now
Right pedal - I want to go right now
Big round thing in front of me - I want to change direction right now

Those shit things on yours do not allow me to do that  ::)

All 3 valid points, but your argument is fatally flawed.... its got nowt to do with the tyres.... its the 4 pot engine up front!

No point using a machete to cut carrots, also no point putting grippy tyres on a 4 pot!  ;D

I see where your argument is going, but a 2.2 still needs to stop and go round corners, and is only slightly lighter than a v6.  And the ease in which it wheelspins when pulling out of junctions (::)) is concerning ;)

I don't know. I'd have thought you'd be looking to carry the speed through the corners cos once it's gone it takes a while to get it back again.  ;)

I had Khumo Ecsta sports on my miggy, was getting through a set iin 10k  :o but they would stick to the road like toffee to a blanket

Changed them for SP9090's, slightly more road noise but they would last 25k at the least and were only £10 dearer per corner
