If you want the jack to last, ESP with a Tarmac drive, you really need a minimum of 2.5 ton jack.

That's ashame. With dosh being tight ideally I only wanted to spend around the £60-£70 mark.

If I buy this as a ''starter'' kit with the view to upgrading in the future do you think I'll incur any probs with one of these kits?

Well, depends how much use it will get?

Ime 2ton jobs have small wheels which dig in more. Given the radius movement of the saddle arm, if the wheels dig in the frame of the jack is stressed, so any side load and the whole thing can fold up like house of cards.

If you have a brick or concrete drive that allow the wheels to roll as the jack lifts and keep the jack at right angles to the car always, it should be ok. But if you intend to upgrade later you'll be saving money over the long term period by going straight for a 2.5 ton.

Go on eBay, there's a good selection of three tonne jacks on there, all for good money and will be much better than any 2 tonnes.

Plenty of 3T jacks at the price point you're looking for by big name manufacturers with warranty etc - delivery is great from JoB, too.

Go for the one with the widest front wheels you can afford and the longest, lowest body.

i'd have a few concerns with that jack, the Omega is lower than you think, I can see that one from first link struggling sometimes to get under the car. Maybe its just the image that makes it look too big at the front.

Also you do really need a 3 ton, you don't want to be pushing it to its limits, you want it to lift with ease  :)

I spent about £65, good few years ago on my jack, a 3 ton low profile one. Apart from the Halfords 150 piece set, its the best thing I bought for the garage  :)

Get a decent 3 ton jack imho, ideally with na low entry and a decent side saddle which will spread the load area and be alot more stable.

Whilst both of the halford jacks have the ability to lift an Omega I would sooner put my trust is something that is hardly breaking a sweat to lift car safely than one that is at its upper limits, however little use it may get.

Remember you only get one chance with these things so get the best you can afford, same goes for axle stands.

The one Tunnie posted a picture of is a great jack - if you can find one, get it. A friend has one and it's given us sterling service over the last seven years or so in his garage on all sorts of cars. Came from Costco from memory and very cheap.

The Sealey identical version is, sadly, quite a bit more expensive: http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Trolley-Jack-3tonne-Low-Entry-3075LE-Sealey

The toy jacks struggle to get the car up high enough to get under it.

Last time I was in Costco, they have Tunnie's one back in, was thinking of treating myself, but I couldn't lift it in the trolley ;D
