Looking for some advice from the resident experts on the engine in the thread title please.

I believe it is an Isuzu lump, and was also fitted in the Trooper, as well as some Saabs and Renaults.  It would seem that the engine suffers inherent over-heating issues when fitted to Saabs, but I can't find any details of this problem occuring when installed in the Vectra.

Does this engine work well with a manual transmission, which I believe is only a 5-speed (as opposed to the 6-speed 'box fitted to the 1.9 CDTI's), and are the combined cycle fuel economy figures of 40mpg to be believed?

I believe this engine has a cambelt?  What is the schedule for changing this?

Any other info would be gratefully received.

general advice i've heard is given its size its not that good and over all, the 1.9 CDTi is better, when chipped its almost as powerful as the 3.0 V6!

Cambelt replacement is 100k miles or 10 years whichever soonest based on a 2004 car

Funny, I've heard that 1.9s have more issues.

The 3.0 is quoted as have 184bhp and 295lbs/ft of torque, which I thought was pretty good.  I'm not looking for something to set my hair alight, rather a mile muncher that will be happy towing the 'van.

I'm guessing it's going to be a bit of a pig of a job, being a transverse mounted V6?

not if its fitted to a trooper

The 3.0 V6 diesel is a good lump, and the 1.9 can't match the smoothness of the V6, however you can remap the 1.9 to be a lot more powerful, and the V6 isn't very tuneable. They're generally reliable, I thought they can with a 6 speed manual though?

The fault is with the oil cooler....not the auto box.

It is an Isuzu engine and has a split belt and chain configuration which is actulay not to bad to change.

No real issues with them, they are a little less power than you would want from a 3.0 though.

I take on board your comments that you'd expect more power from a 3.0, but if the fuel ecomomy is pretty good then I'm happy with the trade off.  I'm more than happy with the grunt of SWMBO's 2.2 dti, but it would struggle a bit with the 'van in tow.  Just looking for that extra bit of pulling power that I'm hoping thye 3.0 would give.

Manuals rarely give trouble 

And they're 6 speed  Th3 3.0 will have loads more grunt than the 2.2, it's a lovely engine to be honest  .

If its the same engine as that in the Saab 9-5 Aero estate, it should have a 6 speed box.
An old customers has one which he chipped iirc upto about 210 bhp 

Put it this way, its faster then my 3ltr mig and does a good 40 to the gallon
