Insurance groups 7 & 16 respectively.. might make them expensive for a first time driver?

Both the 1.0 and 1.2 are Gen 0 engines with timing chains.  :y

We have owned both, had a 2001 1.0 and now have a 1.2 Design, only used around town but out of the two definately the 1.2, reason we got rid of the 1.0 was it had no go whatsoever, my wife was even afraid to pull out on roundabouts due to the lack of pickup, main reason why we sold it.

The 1.2 is an 05 and fine to be honest, looking to replace it next year with the new model but it will be another 1.2 or maybe a 1.4. Nice thing is like most Vauxhalls pretty reliable and when they go wrong not to expensive to put right. Tank of fuel lasts about 3 weeks on stop start, it really is the family workhorse.

Possibly cheaper with them being diesel though. Worth a try.

Ah! I'd just assumed ..............  ;D ;D
So, are the timing chains a weak point on either? As said, I've noticed a couple of 1.0 cars advertised as having had a new one.  :-\

Left wing idea, what about one of the diesels? Newer 1.3CDTi or one of the older 1.7DTi engines? If shes got a fair commute then I'm sure she'll welcome the economy and extra torque on the motorway too.

The 1.3 is bit new for the intended budget,  ;) ;) ;) and as suggested above assume that a 1700 (of either fuel) might be a tad expensive to insure, she's 22 so might not be too prohibitive  :-\ :-\

Thanks Andy ............ exactly what I wanted, real life experience of either/both.  :y :y

You shouldn't need to do much work on the engine if you get a 3 pot Andy - these engines are considered "throw away" and cheaper to replace with another!

But if they're throw away, that to me sounds like they'll be hard(ish) to come by if you ever needed one.  :-\

In my (limited) experience of them, both are pretty robust engines. Neither have any go, unless you rev the nads off them.  The 1.0 always sounds rough - sewing machine is a phrase I've heard, and quite apt. The 1.2 is noticibly more powerful, feels more refined, but still gutless.

Been having a mull over Corsas myself, as a Rover replacement, but the older models are horrible, real shitboxes, and the current one is out of our price range. I'd only have a diesel one, but our needs are different to yours.

Agreed re the older models, never even considered the newest shape - too expensive & nothing like the original car's remit of being a small town car
Miss Andy just wants as many mpg as is possible & cheap as possible to keep on the road.  :y :y

And a girl ;) (Ruling or no ruling, I'm sure insurance for girls will stay cheaper somehow!)

P.S. "Andy" is a funny name for a girl .. how cruel ;) (referring to the 'Miss Andy' earlier .. I know, I know, I'll never make a stand up comedian ;D)

Andie, in that case ;) (FWIW I believe 'Andi' and 'Andie' are usual for girls, 'Andy' for boys. No idea why I know that..)
