Not very happy with the passat right now after it just died at 70mph in the middle lane of the M6 on Friday in the middle of overtaking an artic!  :o

Couldn't get into the hard shoulder, just stuck in the middle lane for 10 mins (bl**dy scary experience!).
Finally it just restarted, but it is going to the dealers for a check over damn quick!

A mate of mine has bought himself a brand new VW Passat........hes had it 4 days........airbag warning light keeps coming on.....so he phoned vw dealer.......told him its a common fault.......bring it back and we'll disable it......i said to him what the they gonna disable...the airbags??? he laughed....said he didnt know  :o ::)

Also the company i work for has 4 company Vw Sharans.......i heard the other day that all of them (under warranty) has needed new gearboxes fitted.....all done under 100k before failing........

Seems like Vw dont make em like them like they used to  :-/
The couple we drive to Spain with are on their 3rd new Passat, always diesels.
First one - 1998 R reg, new airflow meter x 2, new cat, new airbox, all under warranty. They got rid of the car at 110k as there were holes rusting through the roof. Apparently it was due to a new windscreen being fitted and the paint atround the top of the screen being damaged. They got the car new and didn't notice that the screen had been replaced, it had no VW logo, it must have been damaged during delivery.
2nd - a 53 plate. Over £3000 of warranty work including both front seats, the welding came away on the frames.
Current VW - 07 plate new shape. Uses 1 litre of oil every 500 miles, turbo pipe split, air con leaking. Dealer has told them that if the oil consumption is still the same after 15k, they will fit a new engine as this is becoming common!!!
Never had any quibble from the dealer, work always done without question.
You may be right Taxi Driver, they are not as good as the old ones, too complicated, too many electrics.

We had a few VW's in the seventies & they where ALL crap  >:(

I had a Golf in the 80's 1.5 GLS Auto iirc .......great little car  :y

The only thing i remember that im sure it wasnt suppose to do was....
You could make it go pass the red line if you moved the shift from D to 1st doing 50mph  ;D ::)

I also had a hire Golf auto a couple of years ago for a week........well liked the 6sp autobox  :y didnt have it long enuf to pass comment on reliability.........but it didnt go wrong in the week i had it  :y

Part exchanged 1998 Polo 1.4CL against the Omega. Owned it since 2000 and spent very little on it. Main reason I got rid was bodywork getting tatty. Great little car, never once let me down :y

current IROC (scirocco is th productino name) to kick off at £20k for the 2.0 TFSI.

my first Passat was an S plate 1.9TDi (VP engine). I sold it on 189k miles and it was superb.

Replaced it with a W-reg 1.9TDi (PD engine) which was perfect until the MAF started to go a couple of thousand miles ago. I'd gladly have another. would REALLY like a gunmetal EOS on the big wheels they do.

I don't like company cars - unless they get me what I want.

I get mileage and I'd rather clock up 10,000 in my Omega than have some repmobile.

Only time I had one it was a paper excersise with my Carlton due to 4000 miles PA just for business

Mine is the 1.9 Tdi

Into the garage tomorrow morning. It seems they think it is the fuel pump, seems there have been a spate of these, (could swear Mark mentioned this to me a while back).

Oh it has now also got through 1.5l of oil in a week (light on, topped up and now it has gone again, not leaking).

Still, on the positive side I am leaving the job as soon as I find another one so I can get something non tractoresque soon. :)

I wonder what I will get as a hire car in the interim... :-/

Lol, both the faults you talk about are common......oil consumption sudden increase due to stupid service intervals and pump fauilure!

VAG (2 or 3 worst) do have reliability problems at the moment and parts are not easy to source due to some financial issues and payment of suppliers it would seem.

Old VW's were reliable but, lets be honest, they had bugger all features! Christ, the Polo didn't even get servo brakes as standard until the 90's so there was bugger all to go wrong!

Well if the car has to stay in the garage for a while I won't mind too much (dependant on what I get in the meantime).

I remember the Polos well and driving a 1.0l model once. The first time I pressed the brake pedal and nothing happened!

What is it with the Germans and standard equipment in cars??

Ask for mileage allowance - much better! :y

Even better, get out of this job before it does me in.... ;)

Mileage allowance at this company is not anywhere near the Government figures, so becomes less appealing, especially when my average mileage is 1,000 miles a week.

And quite possibly you'll be driving one in the morning again  ;D :D
