I have a whine which gets louder and louder the faster i go, i think its the front wheel bearing as when i turn to the right the noise gets quieter.
would this be the wheel bearing or something else?

Good chance it is the wheel bearing.

Jack the car up, safely on to axle stands, grasp the wheel at 9/3 o'clock and see if you have any "rocking" play.

Once you decide it is the bearing I would advise GM only .. damned expensive but I went for ebay cheapies .. only lasted 2000 miles . . Cost me a small fortune when one failed on holiday in France .. and that small fortune got worse when the French one failed shortly after. If I had put GM on first time I'd have had a stress free holiday and been quids in as well

Easily doable job .. just needs a 320Nm torque wrench to do up the hub nut. I hired one for 1/2 a day the first time .... 2nd time I did it up tightish, put the wheel on without the dust cover and wheel centre, then popped to a local garage and put a couple of quid in their tea fund .... 2 minutes later it was torqued up nicely .. Drove home and did the dust cover/wheel centre ...

Sorry to jump in. Do you have to replace the whole hub? Can you not just buy the bearing for the front? I will have one to do on mine at some point. I've got a press so getting it out and in is no bother

Possibly, but probably best/easiest to replace the whole hub ............ preferably with OE. Cheap aftermarket bearings have a reputation for failing sooner rather than later.

Normally I just press them out and go to the local bearing supplier and get a SKF or equivalent hi end bearing. However I had a snoppy around and if you do go down just the bearing route. Vx bearings are only 20 odd quid

It`s the front hub Dave, easy to do and if you get them from Autovaux they`re about £60. Done about 10k on mine and no problems.

I have a looked today at all the wheels but its not obvious which one the wheel bearing is going i checked them all but no play, could this still be a bearing or something else?

Could still be the bearing. A pit in one of the races can just make a noise. It's a bit like mine. I've got a little rumble around left hand bends but there's no play in the bearing

As Entwood says, check for play by grabbing jacked up wheel at quarter past three ( Position - not time !) http://images.omegaowners.com/forum/smf2000/Smileys/oofstd/grin.gif and and rocking wheel. Then repeat at six o clock. Take great care that your car is properly supported prior to doing this test!

I once replaced both front wheel hubs at about £80 each only to eventually track noise down to front tyres. Strongly suggest that if rocking test does not show up any significant play, you should put front wheels and tyres on the back axle. You would be amazed at the din that some cheap tyres can make. In my experience,they tend to become noisy after several thousand miles.
