The story so far ...

Last night my car refused to lock. The indicators flash but the central locking was dead. Manually locking the drivers door failed to trigger the central locking (CL) so I locked them all manually. Today I had the drivers door apart and the motor out. Both microswitches appear to be working (according to my voltage tester) and the motor works because I hooked it up direct. Gave me quite a shock because that thing shifts when you connect it up!

Put it all back together and it worked ... once. Couldn't unlock afterwards and seems to be dead as a doornail although the indicators do flash so presumably the alarm is armed. Car runs OK. So, suspicion starts to point at the CL ECU. So, questions:

1) Does the CL ECU sound like the major suspect or am I missing something?

2) assuming it is, are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of? Presumably my key will need reprogramming to the replacement one?

3) Are they all the same or am I looking for a specific part-number here?

4) Where is the damn thing and how do I get to it?

The car is a 51-plate 2.6 CDX.

Cheers,

J

Oh, should have mentioned. Sometimes the switches click when I press the blipper button but sometimes they don't. If I turn the key manually sometimes I hear a click and the locking toggle jumps a bit. Not movement otherwise though.

Yep, fuse checked. That was fun as my handbook said it was a different fuse! Checked them all. Door light and curtesy light come on and I think they're the same circuit. If I sit in the car and move the locking toggle I still get nothing. Got to be either microswitches or CL ECU or I'm missing something. Checked the former and no idea how to find or check the latter. Someone on here says it is behind the driver side kick panel so I'll look when it is light.

Not checked it the petrol filler cap works yet!

Good call. Not a lot of room in there but might be able to get a tester in there somehow. Will give it a go.

I wouldn`t rule out the motor until you have checked it with a good one in there - they are known for dead spots, and I have been caught out myself many times. We no longer test motors with a meter and voltage, we now only test them by substitution.

I hooked it [the motor] up to a power source and it ran both ways top to bottom. Wouldn't that be enough? Not got a spare motor anywhere but could check down the scrappy.

Well, tried the Maplin switches today but they didn't fit. Anyone got an old motor lying around they'd be willing to let go?

probably one of the locks is not fully locking look at the knobs when locking one may be up abit more than the rest... think last time it happend to mine was rear pass side door.

Sorry, no idea. From what I've read on here the usual suspect appears to be the microswitch(es) on the side of the central locking motor. Someone on here said he had a couple of worn wires inside the rubber hose that takes all the door electrics through the A-post. That might be causing a dodgy earth connection and mixing things up a bit. It's a bit tight in there and frankly it was easier getting the locking motor out. Only other thing I can think of is the central locking control unit. On mine it appears to be integrated with the alarm (Delphi Megamos) and is hidden behind the drivers side kick panel. I've had mine out and in pieces and it is all coated in plastic inside to prevent moisture so I cannot see an easy way to test it. Have you tried the key reprogramming lately? If you open the car, turn the key in the ignition (don't start) and hold down the open or close button the central locking should close and then open (or maybe it is the other way around.) Given your key is "talking" to the car if this doesn't work then I'd guess it is starting to fail.

I'm kind of out of my depth here though. Spent 2 days trying to fix mine and fixed diddly-squat so far! Still, that's Easter. Central locking dies. Maybe it'll rise again in a few days ...
