Drinking: how do you balance this with work life?
« on: 08 April 2012, 22:15:25 »

I remember when I was a youngster just starting out my working life. I was a Ward Steward serving tea, coffe, breakfast, dinners, cleaning etc at the Northampton General. I did a couple of eenings a week and the whole weekend and I don't think there was a time that I did a shift without a hangover. Always pissed as a youngster.

Now, I'm 30 this year (October if you want to buy me something.... I need a torque wrench that will go between 8nm and 40nm  ;D) and I have to say that I have had to cut out beer drinking in the week simply because if I start drinking it'll turn in to a session... I can't just do one or two and stop.

So, really I wanted to know what your beer drinking habits are like and if you drink in the week are you affected at work? I have to add though I am a night mare at weekends. I love my beer and it really is proof that there is a God and he wants us to be happy.... for 2 days a week  ::) but then comes Sunday and that's a day of ridding any hangovers and back to an early night ready for another weeks' long slog.

Discuss.  :y

I drink almost every lunch time and have done for more or less my whole working life - 42 years.

But in early days it was one maybe two pints at lunch and for last 12 years has been 1 or 2 glasses of wine. I do not drink much in evenings - and do not do much heavy drinking now. When people suggest a session after a meal at 11 pm I leave 'em to it now. At 30 I would have been up for it.

Impact on those around you needs to take precedence of course.

That's interesting cos I used to drink @ lunch too but I got far too sleepy coming back to work. Do you not then fancy getting home and having a session? Not out on the town or anything like that but just chillaxing with a few cold Peroni's. mmmmmm

I think as you get older you can take it or leave it and sit at home quite happily  without the need to be sat in a pub from opening to closeinng time.

That said If I go to footie  you need a drink to watch my lot  ;) ;D

I pretty much don't anymore. Once upon a time I worked where folks would go out once a week or so and I'd join them - but I was 16..

These days if I go out I'm driving (so don't drink) or people are going out in London which is a mare to get to so I don't bother going.. so it's very rare indeed that I'll have a drink. Half a glass of wine yesterday lunchtime (I was driving home in the evening) for my Dad's birthday was the last time in a few months..

Aaron, i think you've highlighted a bit of a trend here. it seems that people are not going out cos of the hassle.

plus there's the expense of it. i get 4 pint cans of Carlsberg Export for £4 down't shops. i go to a pub and pay £3.40 for one!!!!! no fekkin wonder the pubs are all shutting. its ashame but no one's going to pay them prices for long

Used to regularly drink 12-13 pints of a weekend night. Now I'm a grown-up, allegedly, but more importantly I tend to start work at 5am, and they dislike me coming in with a hangover, or worse, still unsteady on one's feet...

To be honest I get sleepy if I do not have a drink - I actually feel I have had a real break rather than sitting in front of a screen in the office eating lunch
