Gentlemen / Ladies Start Your Engines!!!
« on: 02 April 2008, 17:42:37 »

Been to Donington today to spend my raceday voucher...

Drove a Mini Cooper first, to prove that I could drive :D  115mph on the straights...  40mph on the slowest bend....  nice cars...

Single seaters are Ford 1800cc Zetec mid-engined 500kg 4 speed rockets... 130mph on the straight...  kept overtaking Ferarri road cars... that's a strange feeling 8-)

Very nice.  :y

How were the cars set up? Any frustrating rev limits or did they let you play?

I did one at Thruxton about 10 years back and ended up in a Formula Renault.

During the tuition, the instructor took the p!ss out of me for using 5th gear on the back straight in one of their Rover 220 Turbos, so the next lap I did the length of the back straight bouncing off the limiter in 4th.  ;D

I did a similar thing a few years ago at Brands Hatch driving a single seater 2.0L Palmer-Audi. Phenominal experience! :y When you realise just how quick these type of single seaters are it just makes you wonder what the opps an F1 must be like!! :o

No clocks in the single seater, felt a bit of valve bounce in 3rd just before slipping into 4th, as I say 130 mph...  doubt they're governed too much if at all, I was very lucky, I was behind the pace car, I kept with him all the way...  Donington is a lovely track!  Oversteer was only evident when going into the "S" bend before the straight...  probably should of braked sooner and gone through flatter....  there's always next time!!!!! ::)

Yes. It's when you get one out of shape that you really realise it. They swap ends and put you in the gravel if you've not got opposite lock on the instant they start to let go, and they're normally set up pretty soft for joe public. A race prepped single seater will be an order of magnitude quicker and that's just the first rung of motor racing.

.. and when you see F1 guys correct a slide it looks effortless. :o

my brothers girlfriend at the time videoed it so we could watch it over and over and over again. Someone accidentally spilled coffee over the tape ::)but when we sat and watched the tape he was commenting at the time on what he was doing wrong and how he thought he may be able to improve,  Its very addictive
