At the risk of being controversial; I think road fund tax should be abolished all together. Put the tax on the fuel, so those who use the roads the most, and consequentially burn more fossil fuel, pay accordingly pro rata . Simple!! :o

I agree. Fuel prces grab headlines, though, and if the government had put their 2p on this time, let alone any more they would have been lambasted. So, instead they pledge not to do that and increase road tax in the cowardly way they did, averting the headlines by staging the increase over a couple of years.

When this government hands you something on a plate it's a sure sign you need to brace yourself for a kick in the gonads. >:(

There not likely to do that as it would impact the economy far more and drive the cost of living up due to the knock on costs to general goods following increased delivery costs.

Vehicle Excised Duty is already in effect an ownership tax. The fact that you now have to NOT tax (SORN) your car when it's not on the road points to an ownership tax to me. I know someone who was fined for not re-SORNing his 'historic' car in time. The car wasn't even roadworthy, the cost of the VED was zero, it's not like he was trying to avoid paying some thing.
How much tax would we all like on our fuel at the pump. We already have some of the highest taxed fuel in the world without adding more tax to it. They'd only keep the 'road tax' aswell but call it something else, eg owner admin charge.

The awkward truth is that this country's infrastructure is not geared up for any other kind of transport. For decades areas of housing have been established miles from any amenities and workplaces, with not a penny invested in public transport infrastructurel eaving the car as the only transport option for most basic needs such as getting the kids to school or getting to work.

Even if there were the will to change that tomorrow, it will take a generation for any change (in planning policy, for example) to make a significant impact. The fact is there is no direction from government at all that hints at a long term plan. They are simply happy for an excuse for extra taxation and that's as far as their thought processes have gone.

No matter how unaffordable the government makes driving there will be no increased take-up of public transport except in city centres, and I expect the (privatised) public transport companies will actually see this as an opportunity to hike their prices to maintain the current differential between driving and public transport.

Absolutely spot on. No complicated costly collection schemes, do away with a few thousand pen pushers, display an MOT and insurance sticker instead. No need for millions to be spent on cameras and tracking systems. Bit of a rebate for the haulage industry. Far too sensible for this lot. They won't even tax foreign wagons as they say it is too costly but they can track and issue bills to 33 million motorists - unbelievable. Foreign lorries should display an annual permit, in Switzerland its called a Vinette ( could be spelt wrong )which is available at point of entry and at most filling stations. You don't have to buy one immediately but you can't leave the country without paying - dead simple. This would go some way to giving UK  haulage firms a level playing field. Unfortunately that would help UK businesses so there will be no chance of that.
