Why take things off???
« on: 14 April 2012, 07:27:25 »

Hello chaps,

I have noticed a few threads saying that parts are being removed from the V6's....
Notably the EGR, MULTI RAM and the SAI, Why do this? What's gained?

Muti ram, I wouldn't recommend  that, without mentioning it will cock up the power delivery.

EGR and SAI are emissions related on cold starts I believe. Who cares, it's emissions related, doesn't work very well either by now, and my car, being a face lift drive by wire engine, doesn't have all that bollarx anyway.

But note, ALL the v engines have multi rams. For good reason. It's to do with inlet length tuning to achieve low down torque, and bhp at top end rpm. Gives a smooth flat and plentifully power curve.

Yep, totally agree with wot he said ^

Removing/blanking the EGR does help reduce the crud in the inlet a little but not a huge amount - regular (4-5k) oil changes help keep the breathers clean much more effectively.

The SAI system gets in the way when working on the front of the engine (e.g. belt changes) and you could argue that the pump is an unnecessary weight to carry around (it's behind the N/S corner of the front bumper).  I'd say that it ain't worth going out of your way to remove it, but if you have to take it off to get into something then it's as quick to blank the pipes off as it is to put it back!  You need to blank off the vacuum hose and the pipe coming off each exhaust manifold.

Should have said... you can't fully remove the EGR valve, it still has to be plugged in, or the engine light will come on.

Could you feed the EGR a fake resistance value to make it think it's still plugged in?

It's been done on plenty other VXs so I don't see why not, e.g. http://www.z22se.co.uk/forum/threads/fitting-the-egr-cheater.5891/

Cool, off to the workshop!
So, job list....
Remove SAI and all associated pipework.
Remove EGR setup and build board to trick the ECU....
I love stuff like this!  :y

SAI, loose it.

EGR, I'd only block off if it was problematic.

Multirams, leave in place.

Yep, defo leave all multiram gear unless you're planning to replace the entire engine management system!  Cos it'll be gutless without it.

Even with different engine management, you still want the advantages of rpm tuned inlets.

Ok, ok!!! I'll leave the Multirams!!!  :y Lol...
Even though I've sorted the mis-fire, the car still seems down on power??? No lights on so I think the ECU is happy the way things are???
One thing I did notice is the my range has jumped about 60 miles!  :) so that's good!!!  :y

Yes, absolutely!  What I meant to say (but forgot the important part) was that to junk the multiram you would need a modified/different intake AND a new engine management system - and not use it on the road cos the bottom end torque would be gone!  Throttle bodies anyone?  Wwwhhooo-haa-haa-haa!

I'm sure I've seen a racing V6 running on Alpha-Weber set up, look sooo sexy but as you say, no good for the road!!!! Shame! Lol
