2.5TD leaking injector
« on: 15 April 2012, 13:10:26 »

Checking the engine this morning after an oil change I noticed fluid in the front (#1?) injector well. Checked it with smell and taste, thinking it was diesel from  - possibly - a leak-off pipe, but no, it was just plain water. Having driven through some heavy rain and puddles recently, I thought it was probably just that, however I started the engine and then spotted bubbles in the water.

What all that garbage is leading up to is, can anyone recommend a good make of 27mm socket for the injector? I see several available. Also, are any other procedures necessary to access the injector for tightening other that disconnecting the pipes?

Finally, am I just lucky that water got into that well? Or is it something more sinister? :-\

Given that one doesn't have the feedback sensor, just use a quality deep socket.

I have some Draper Expert injector sockets, but I would only use on No4. Broken no end of them ;D

If you only need the one injector out, you don't need a window socket. Plenty about, cheap enough, and as long as you avoid the cheapest/nastiest, you should get one at most places for a few quid. Ebay is also an option, but there is a delay of course.  Anyone near you who could lend you one?

I would also be wondering where the water came from  ::)

If you want one for the future, I will recommend consolidatedtools on ebay, I got mine from them, and it took all my injectors out with their window socket. (as TD says, they do break sometimes)

I was hoping not to take it out, just nip it up a bit and check it before replacing the washer. Any other processes reqd. other than pipes removal? and any other ideas about the water? Perhaps I was just lucky. I think I'll use the water check on the other injectors as well.::)

Edit: I assume you are talking about broken sockets, and not injectors?

OK I understand, and yes I was talking about breaking sockets. I don't know about any process, just undo what needs to be undone. Good point about the washer, our use copper, while I hear BMW don't use them at all.
You may be right about the water, seems to be a useful test, (soapy water may be even better).

I discovered that the water came through the scuttle and ran along the camshaft cover grooves (my drive slopes down towards the house), finishing nicely in the injector well. The silicone treatment is required there.

I now have a spanner, but am reluctant to pull the leak-off pipes too hard, having been on for 13 years, the rubber will be age hardened and will almost certainly break. I'll get some more pipe before pulling them off. :y
