I am on the lookout for a set of quality jump leads to keep in the car. Any pointers on the optimum thickness and length of  leads would be very much appreciated

I am sure you will get the technical experts Phil, I would be tempted to buy a reasonable set from somewhere like Halfords, avoid cheap and nasty and get a decent length.....I tend to use a battery booster, for any flat batteries at home....

Avoid the cheap thin ones, they are crap. Get as long & as thick as you can. I've had occasions when the car's been pointing the wrong way & I've had to drive up the the rear of the flat car.
You can make your own from welding earth cable & some good snapping clamps

Really good quality. the clamps are strong and thick, yet not so thick that they dont fit into the tight space where the battery clamps are. Plus they come in a nice case to keep secured in your boot.

Plus a decent length.

 . This is what I made mine from. Minimal current loss over a decent length. Cheap one's are useless, too much current loss. Made mine about thirty years ago and still going strong. 
( Purely coincidental that they use to stock this cable where I work)

i got a excellent set from my local factors the wire is nice and thick and the clamps open up wide and are very strong they were £15

Bought those and they live in the boot. Been used in work to jump start tractors and everything with no problems. Really thick cable (35mm) and the clamps feel very well made.
