Ticking then misfire
« on: 19 April 2012, 18:25:39 »

Recently my car started to misfire - I assumed this was due to water dripping on my n/s coil pack, as it has done before, but all the spark plug wells are bone dry on both sides.

This has developed into a puzzling problem - when the engine is cold, it starts and idles normally on all cylinders, but when driving, there is a loud-ish ticking in time with engine speed which wasn't there before, which gets louder with increased acceleration. As soon as the engine is warm, it starts to misfire again.

Codes I'm getting are:
0100 MAF
0161 O2 sensor (an old code I think)
0300 Random/multiple misfire detected
0306 misfire cylinder 6
0305 misfire cylinder 5
0304 misfire cylinder 4
0305 misfire cylinder 5 (again)

As I said, there are old codes on there which I haven't cleared since the problem with water on the 1-3-6 coil pack, I've got a feeling the new misfire must be on cylinder 5.

An ideas on what could be happening?  :-\

1,3,5 coilpack. So if that`s an old code you most probably have a miss on #6. "Ticking" noise could be arcing from the N/S coilpack (2,4,6)

Ah yes, a mistake there, sorry  :-[

So a new 2-4-6 coil pack you think? eBay?

Whip the coilpack off and visually check for any damage, I`d also swap plug 6 for a known good one and re-read codes see if you still get a 0306

Hmmm, I can't, unless the 40 starts thing works  :-\

Right, replace plug 6 with either 2 or 4. Read the codes again, if you get 0302 or 0304 (depending which plug you swap) you know the plugs at fault. If none of them, in all probability it will be a damaged coilpack @ #6. Ideally need codes clearing though to be certain

Yeah, good idea, I'll try that in the morning. Should really have thought of that myself  :)

Could the problem be anything to do with lifters? I don't know what a noisy lifter sounds like, but I've read that it sounds like a worn cam 'ticking'.

With this in mind, I did an oil change with some Wynn's lifter treatment as well as changing round two of the spark plugs, which seemed to be a bit loose. The ticking noise was still there, but on a long run where the engine got well up to temperature, it didn't misfire this time, so didn't throw up any new codes.

The plugs are known to come loose, and will misfire if there's soot around the base ime. Although there was a coil PAC issue as well. :-\

Does nobody see relevance in the maf code?
