Hi,been going through some paperwork tonight with my daughter for her car and didn't see any sorn letters,asked her about it and she said the person who she had it off told her she had sorn'ed it .My daughter didn't realise that once she became the owner that she had to do it again,and then annually,problem is she had it in august 2009! so my question is how do i go about it,do i sorn it then see what happens,seek advice at the citizens advice or ring the dvla and tell them what happened,any advice greatly appreciated...Wayne

Hello not sure what you are asking? is your daughter using the car ie is it on the road taxed and insured etc if it is it doesnt need to be SORN

Hi she bought the car in august 2009,been garaged and unused since then,she is now having drivng lessons and wanted her car putting on the road,it came to light that since its been in her possession its never been sorn as the previous owner lead her to believe that once sorned it didn't need doing again!...just not sure how to go about it...Thanks,,,Wayne

think you have a few options
1 say nothing as shes got away with it for so long,but when she does tax it then you might get proplems
2 you "buy" the car get it your name sorn it then later on" sell" it back.

just to let you know this is how the sorn works. when your doughter bought the car she would have been given the green slip by the last owner. the last owner would have had to send of the logbook to the dvla and you would have been sent a new logbook registered in your doughters name at this point the dvla are aware who is the registerd keeper. the fact that the last keeper sorned it has no bearing once you become the registered keeper you would have to resorn it as the new owner. you should have had a warning letter from the dvla if either the car is untaxed or has not been sorned failure to do either is now a automatic fine of around 80 quid it dont matter where you keep the car either garaged or otherwise you can get a sorn notice form from any post office fill it in and send it of there is no charge on a downer its possible for them to fine you  need to explain to them the situation as i said if the vechile has been registed to you the dvla would have contacted you sending you a sorn or tax notice hope this helps

You buy it, it is only a paper exercise, get it MOT'd and Taxed, she is going to want to drive it anyway if she is taking lessons. You really need to do this anyway because if it is not sorned and not insured you will loose the car anyway.....

You could check the vehicle status on DVLA website or askMID   
I just put my car reg in to ask MID and found my car is showing as not insured  checked insurance and found I have got one letter wrong just on insurance document  I have just emailed them and hope to get it sorted ASAP looks like they will charge £30 to change that as well it already cost me £44 to change address  so looks like the cheap insurance wont be that cheap after all

If she has a V5 (registration document) in her name then it was down to her to declare the car as SORN.

This should have been done as soon as car was purchased.

Print off a V890 form   from DVLA    ( just put in V890 0n Google )  this explains the penalties .

Not sure temporarily changing ownership is going to make any difference to the SORN that was not declared.

If she does not have a V5 in her name ~I would think it means that previous owner did not send off the old V5 to Swansea when it was sold. This could be the case because she should have had a warning notification from DVLA stating she has to make a SORN.

Indeed. We had a fine come through for the mini so I called and explained the situation, even admitted that I knew it was my/our responsibility and that we'd forgotten. They were very good and wiped the fine straight away and gave us 30 days to tax/sorn it

If you're now ready to put it on the road, just tax and MOT it and see what happens. Otherwise, I'd get the form from the post office and renew the SORN.

I wouldn't waste any of my life trying to phone the DVLA unless there is a problem with either of the above flagging up that it has been missing a few years of SORN. If they do flag up a problem then, as said, come clean and say that you realise that you should have renewed SORN but are surprised you received no reminders.

It could be that it didn't get registered correctly to you, in which case they'll be chasing the previ8ous owner, but that'll come to light when you try to SORN or tax it.
