Anyone ever get carb cleaner in their eye???
« on: 01 May 2012, 09:09:00 »

Hi dudes,

Cleaning my breathers last night. put the carb cleaner down the breather bridge. thought it would go through. it did but a jet of the stuff backsprayed right in to my eye.

i rinsed a few times immediately and yes i know i shoulda been wearing goggles.

googled the problem and it seems quite common and rinsing is the answer but i am due an eye test so may book that as soon as so they can have a look.

anyone ever do this?

ps, it aint nice. vision was never blurred but the skin around the eye stung like a beatch :(

Yep, not comfortable is it?  :o

I went through a phase of writing a warning about this after every time I suggested using carb cleaner.

Hope you recover soon fella.

Stings like a sonofabitch but given you washed it out immediately I doubt there's any harm done long term ;)

(Top tip: Petrol also burns like you wouldn't believe in your eyes! And while we're on safety tips: Brake cleaner is not a substitute for swarfega, no matter how many times I might have used it to clean my hands  :-[ Oh and some cleaners decompose to toxic phosgene gas when heated - thread on that here recently - fatal in microscopic doses..)

It is one of those mistakes you tend to only make once, isn't it!

Yeah, doesn't taste too special either and, worse than that, it affects the taste of the beer you try and wash it away with. :(

In my early Omega days, when I Was about 20, I changed my first ever fuel filter on my 4 pot. Didn't de pressure the system, and had a high pressure waterfall of petrol straight into my  eyes.

Not good!! Never made that mistake again though!!

Thanks for all the replies... seems quite a common thing lol

I phoned my optician. she sent bear straight down the emergency eye clinic. all tested. apparantly i've damaged my bottom eye lid and a bit of the white of my eye. some drops for a week and im all good.

defo wont be doing this job again without gloves, goggles and mouth mask  :-[

Don't let TB calling you gay for wearing gloves and goggles put you off wearing them. Although he does like that sort of thing.

Once got a can of MEK (methyl ethyl ketone ) over my head and face while working under an aircraft.

Within 24 hours, I looked like a rather leper with the way my lips, eyes and face dried up  :(
Not nice but the fumes certainly helped clear up my cold.

lol dont care about looking gay. as long as in future that dont happen again ;)

as for the job itself, really was a piece of piss.... only trouble was getting the 'Y' pipe back on the breather box. them bloody clips. i hate them. so i simply swapped it for a jubilee clip.... all sorted.

cable ties round all breathers to breather bridge. cable tie to keep icv in.

job done.

should this be done with every oil change i.e. 3000 miles?
