ABS and Traction Control lights.
« on: 01 May 2012, 14:40:58 »

Ok, I bought myself a 'new' Omega over the weekend. Drove it down from the Wirral to Essex yesterday. It was ok most of the way, but the EM light kept coming and going. I'm going to try an AFM to cure that one. What is worrying me a little more is this: About a couple of miles from home I had to brake hard because a lorry pulled into my lane. The EM light, ABS and Traction control lights all came on together. The EM light went out virtually straight away, but the other two stayed on and are still on now. It doesn't seem to have made any difference to the running/driving of the car. Speedo and rev counter are still working ok. I would rather the lights weren't on though, so how can I extinguish them?
The car is an X reg 2.5 facelift.
Thanks in advance.

Would this just not be a sensor failure?

One of the wheel sensors.  ;) ;) ;) Could just be crap on the reluctor (castellated) rings that the sensors 'look' at.  :y

Could be a wheel sensor mate - one at each corner (need Tech 2 to identify) - or more probably abs ecu - our Estate started with just lights on then later speedo started playing up followed by power steering issues!

Replacement abs ecu sorted - (~£50 off OOF) - but a bugger to fit due to restricted access.
(Abs ecu working ok on my Elite saloon  ::) ::))

Good luck with it - having done this job can offer assistance if requested - HTH  ;)

Goosed ABS ECU is usually associated with a failed speedo too.  :y

Thanks Colin and everybody else.
The previous owner gave me so much info on Saturday when I bought the car, I was swamped.
I remember him saying something about replacing the ABS ecu and how fiddly it was. Maybe fitted another goosed one. Is this common?
So, I'll have to ask him again. If he just cleaned the old one and put it back, it may need replacing.
Any TECH 2's down my way? Rainham, Essex.
Colin, if you find yourself down this way, feel free to bring your spanners  ;D
If only the Elite had been legal to drive, it would be sitting on my drive now.

I would have assumed a defective wheel sensor would throw up a warning as soon as you get over 5mph??...

ECU seems logical as the warning popped up when the system was asked to actually work, i think thats what you said wasn't it Mr Smooth?

and again this is all assumptions which can be a right royal pain in the behind sometimes lol

Thanks Mark.
Yep, the lights came on when I applied the brakes brutally. This was just a couple of miles from home.
I had driven from the northern tip of the Wirral peninsular to Essex with no problems.
I suppose I'll have to post a wanted ad then......
