If you ned any verbal assistance ring or pm me Dave.
Elite saloon now sitting on someone else's drive!!
Thanks for that Colin.
I think the way forward is to get it plugged in first, just so I'm pointing in the right direction.
Glad someone had the sense to buy such a nice Elite. Hope it's a fixer-upper and not a breaker.

I had an interesting conversation with our fitters at work tonight about this problem.
Their first word was 'sensor'. Then one of them suggested I may have a little play in a wheel bearing. So I told them that funnily enough, one of the mot advisorys was for slight play in the n/s/f wheel bearing.
They reckon the heavy braking moved the wheel enough for the sensor not to get a reading. Sounds bloomin' feasible to me. Their advice was to take the sensor out, clean the 'eye' with a soft cloth, then tap it back in as far as it will go. What do you chaps think?

Front sensors very often break during removal,so may be worth having a spare to hand before you start. ;)
I may have one as it happens. ;D

I thought the speed pick up was from the near side rear though?

Probably won't be able to remove the offending sensor until next Wednesday now. Got some lonnnggg shifts coming up, so until then, it's just work, sleep, shower, eat, work. No time for car mechanicals.
Nice to know I can get a replacement sensor easily enough, should I need it. Thanks chaps.

If its post 1998, I think you're being overly optimistic.

Rather than break the sensors - likely as they will be stuck on after 12+ yrs - get a code reader on the ABS ECU, and save yourself time and heartache. If that confirms its a sensor, then you know. If the ECU is unreadable, or has an ECU error, or claims no stored errors, then I'm afraid there is only 1 course of action...

Sorry Dave tend to agree with above.  You will break the front wheel sensors trying to get them out unless you have a guardian angel.  My money is on the abs ecu but as Jaime says a code reader will pinpoint the problem. :y

Apparently, having spoken to the previous owner, he had the ecu repaired last year.
Maybe it's just failed again.
But then I still have a speedo, rev counter and normal power steering, all of which I'm led to beleive, are affected by a failed abs ecu.

I had the same symptoms last year.It was the n/s rear wheel sensor iirc. You need a code reader capable of telling you what the problem is.
PM incoming.
