Anyone owned a PAN
« on: 02 May 2012, 12:21:02 »

Im looking at getting a decent touring bike , ive always had the sports tour and last was the zzr1200 . Ive never owned a pan european but looking at the luggage capacity and rider/passenger comfort these look tempting . Anyone owned one and anything to look out for , seen this one that looks nice .

Always tempted to try one, just lacked character for me. From what I hear they are practically bullet proof!

Depends on your budget, GS is a fantastic tourer. They hold their value so well, I could almost sell mine now for what I paid for it & I bought it in 2009 from BMW dealer  :o

It's astoninishing how well they hold value.

Done several runs to the Isle of Man TT, runs to Wales. Next it either Scotland or France, depending on weather.

Stabaliser's are an option  ;D

Or a sidecar  ::)

Police used the pan so cant be that bad . Nearly all the bikes ive owned ive either made money on re sale or broke even . Ill try and avoid dealers but have bought from them in the past ...never owned a bmw but im guessing your talking 5K plus for a gs secondhand  :-\

Yes. Can not get a 1200 GS sub 5k really, odd few, but not many.

Some 1150's can be had for less though

i`ve owned both a pan euro and a k100 rt and i much prefered the pan euro for the long distance courier work i did back in the 90`s.... even in london it was agile and comfortable only problem i had with it was first time i rode it i nearly dropped at the lights...... i was so used to being able to hold the beemer up but i soon got used to extra bulk of it....

Pan will run to interstellar mileage if looked after. Not my cup of tea but I do ride something similar in a Triumph Sprint ST. I guess if it fits your needs then it's the bike for you.  :y

Had a cbr1100xx and although sports tour it was one of the most comfy when i use to do 800 mile round trips
on a regular basis so thats an option i guess . Pan seems to more balls out touring specifically and the weight issue could become a problem i guess . Would have to try it but either way ill be needing the full luggage  :y

Done 2 or 3 miles on both the Beemer k's as well as the pans. Prefer the pans for speed, handling and general robustness but the police spec ones I used did have a habit of eating alternators. Police pans left the Honda production line as police spec bikes with different switchgear and uprated components whilst the k's, to my knowledge, were aftermarket uprated to police spec.

It certainly held my day to day kit as well as speed gun and other guff easily but unsure for touring but shouldn't think their would be a problem.

Beware, however, the later pan 1300's. They spat a few cops off who sadly died and resulted in the loss of a (very large) market for Honda.  Don't think they have regained that inroad yet, despite the passage of a number of years......
