Councils
« on: 04 May 2012, 00:03:25 »

Hi all,

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I am not into politics apart from thinking that half the b******s from Parish council upwards are on the make.

Why, do councils have to be Party. Why are not all council members just elected as local people  and independant of Tory, Labour etc.

Sorry again if this is a stupid question....

The people who would be most qualified to lead an assembly of people in the running of a metropolis, would IMO be the successful leaders of private industry, who can't just rely on putting council tax up, but who work to margins in the real world, have a wealth of life experience, and who aren't blinkered by their outdated boring beliefs. Unfortunately though because of the nature of who they are, they aren't running councils.

Councillors on the other hand, aren't artists, they're not scientists, and they don't by definition have any qualifications. What is their appeal? Why are they in that position? Their ideas and personality? That doesn't say much! The role appeals to self serving trumped up pigheaded baffoons who know what's best for us, and who spend other peoples money risk free.

Understand most of that, Geoff :y
I interpret that as you agree basically with me....
I saw a thing on BBC South tonight that Brighton Council are planning to put a 'revolving eye on a pole' on the seafront. Private sources can't get the money, so council are going ahead with it. They are talking millions :o with the usual bullsh*t about jobs and tourism......crap >:(
Money like that should be spent at ground level on existing organisations supporting things like autism, disabled, hospices, etc etc.

I found this link...there are probably others. I noted the first response mentioned the cut in social services, which proves my point :y

The electorate are as much, if not more, to blame as the parties though.  I would guess that, for most people, it is easier to just vote for the candidate that represents the party that you most sympathise with, rather than have to examine the actual candidate for capability, trustworthiness, experience, etc.  It's hard enough to get people to go to a polling booth (or complete a postal vote) anyway without having to insist that they should also have to use their brain.  >:(

But independents can be just as guilty of not keeping their election promises. And I think we have had a few donkeys elected in the past!  :D

I think voting should be made compulsory, but with the proviso that every ballot paper has a "none of the above" box to tick.  If the abstentions are higher than any other candidate then the election must be held again but with different candidates!  ;)

People havent got the time to make an in depth analysis of candidates. They have busy lives, earning money to pay tax to keep the unemployable in track suits and fosters, and pay for politicians to watch filth and but duck houses. Politicians on the other hand make a career out of furthering themselves and feathering their nests, whilst pretending to do public good.
