Confused
« on: 08 May 2012, 05:33:49 »

I am a little confused the other week while driving in to work I stopped at some traffic lights as you do and as the light turned green I went to pull away and all I can say is it was like I was wheel spinning but no TC light came on I seemed to have little or no power from the engine and it seemed to take an age to pull away . After driving up the road a little way the engine management light started flashing and then illuminated on the dash. I had to stop at another set of traffic lights the engine sounded very rough and the revs were all over the place at one point the revs dropped so low I thought the engine was going to cut out but it kept going, I pulled in and remembered that we had been advised to switch off the ignition and restart the car to reset the computer when the engine management light came on in our Zafira so maybe the case here would be the same. But to no avail after restart I got a few yards up the road and hey presto the engine management light flashed and then came on again and the engine sounded rough again.

I thought it best to go for a drive on my lunch break and all seemed fine the engine sounded fine and no management light came on all acted like it should and it was the same when I drove home from work no management light no engine problems at all which left me a little confused and that was around 2 weeks ago.

Then the other day though while on my home from work I let the fuel get a little too low for my liking and only had fumes left in the tank and filled up with a fair amount when it all began again the engine management light came on and the engine lost power and sounded rough but this time I stopped switched off the engine and when I restarted all seemed to be fine once more.

Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas what could be causing it. The mechanic in the family has said it might be the plug leads but without seeing the car he would not be able to say for sure I would take it to show him but that would involve a 700 mile round trip to North Wales.

This is the third Omega we have owned as a family but none of the ones before it seemed to have this problem so any help on getting it sorted if anything needs sorting would be appreciated.

I have no code reader but suppose I may be able to try the pedal trick that I read about on here. I dont fancy going back to the vauxhall dealers for another diagnostic that would be another £50. Will give it a go and see where it leads.

I had a similar problem to this with automatic Astra - diagnostics wise it didn't show up but it turned out to be damaged wiring (partly broken wire) to one of the sensors throwing up intermittent engine fault and putting car into limp home mode so to speak - it was like setting off in third gear. Would suggest a good auto electrtician to find the fault - worked for me. :y

PS Have you had any work done on the car recently where some of the wiring may have been disturbed - might give you a pointer as where to start looking.

Is she an Auto.

Had the "spinning" on a Granada once....twas very low gear box fluid....came and went until I topped it up...In those days via a PROPER DESIGNED FILLER TUBE COMPLETE WITH DIPSTICK.

Flashing EML - emissions, thus misfire detected, or trims well off.

Get the codes :y

I assume this is petrol, not LPG?

Yep 2.6 V6 petrol engine. I want LPG but at the moment until I have saved the money its good old petrol power.I hopefully will have a fault code tomorrow so that might answer a few questions fingers crossed. Excuse me if I sound stupid but I am a novice at these things so what does trims well off mean  ???

Yep she is an auto will check the gear box fluid level just to be safe  :y. The Granada I remember them well. We have had three of them and they were always a pleasure to own  ::)
