Stiff steering
« on: 09 May 2012, 20:23:01 »

Adjusted assistance from minimum to medium, to max assistance via tech2 and its made little odds.

Servo tronic relay swapped. Thanks Tunnie.... But No change. No codes either in pas ecu.

Fluid level fine, oil seems good consistency compared to another car here with no pas issues.

Whipped the aux belt off and checked pas pump pulley for play/end float and resistance. Mine is stiffer in reverse direction than direction of aux belt travel, with some end float play. Other car here, spin the pas pump pulley by hand and it's exactly the same resistance spinning back or forth. No end float play at all.

So, pas pump then...? Except Rpm seems to make no differance at all to pas resistance and feel. And I know the top shock mount bearings are pitted.

Any thoughts on a fix?

Only time i've noticed heavy steering is on the 2.2, low revs parking occasionally, that got heavy. But few revs, fixed that.

If pump was knackered, surely be a lot heavier  :-\

Odd tech2 adjustments make no differences  :-\

Where is the servotronic relay?
The system on mine doesnt work, so the steering is heavy all the time even with the power steering working.

I've kinda got used to it but if it's a fault then I really should address it.

Er, I wouldn't say no differance, just very little. First time TB set it to medium assistance there was definately a sort of gyroscopic feel to the steering at speed.

Second time it was adjusted to max, which is supposed to be most unpleasant to drive, I can't say I noticed much change then tbh.

It also seems to be slightly worse when turning one way, more than the other. Although this seems to vary. :-\

yours I would think will be the most popular location behind the glove box. Mine, being a later car is up behind the fuse panel under the steering wheel.

Cheers - I'll have a look in both places.
I take it it will be red in both cases?

Thinking about this, I was wondering if a faulty steering box could cause this.  Was more thinking aloud with possibilities, rather than any science though  :-[

Steering box has fallen under my suspision before. ...er, now why was that...

2woody suspected someone had been in there before when triple checking the steering column to steering box alignment. Sheer bolts still had the sheer of piece/nut attached.

It was stiff then, and suspect some play in the mechanism somewhere near it, if not inside the box itself. Trying to remember if I have ever adjusted the damper....think I have. It's always been stiff though, before I played with it.

Theres four bolts around the damper adjuster nut. I don't suppose there's any use in taking that lot apart, or will a Myriad of springs and cogs come flying out?

Wonder if it's worth checking the servo tronic plug connector to box...

...although that would raise a code surely?

Would have thought so, but only codes I've seen, IIRC, is speed signals...

There be dragons. :o

Pump, I reckon. Mine is not pleasant on medium assist and undriveable on max. Then again, the steering boxes are coded with the required setting, suggesting there's some difference between them. :-\

If you turn it to full lock, can you feel the engine labour, and pump whine a little?
