Road side checks for MOT & ins
« on: 09 May 2012, 21:06:40 »

I thought that they were done via VOSA vehicles  :-\ :-\
On my way home from work earlier this afternoon I saw a Sprinter type van coned off on the opposite side of the road in a bus lane being 'attended to' by 3 or 4 Bobbies (couple of which wore a classic Bobbies helmets  ???) Didn't think anything of it. About 100yds further round the bend was a copper in a marked Police Nissan 4x4 wanna-be with what I can only assume was a camera attached to the B post pointing behind him.
Was he checking MOTs & insurance?  :-\ :-\ :-\ I've only ever seen VOSA marked cars with a board of some sort saying something along the lines of ''we're checking that you're road legal'

Not 100 yards, thought they would do longer distance for average check.

Sounds like an ANPR sting to me. Any other plod near the Nissan? Usual deal is the van reads plates, then have a set of squad cars ready to pounce.

Doubt it, you'd have struggled to get to much more than 30 by the time you got to the car from the roundabout just up the road.

I have seen ANPR vans, sure they were quite plain, the give away was the rear windows where the Camera would be and the plod, not always marked, parked up the road...

I recently passed a patrol car that had pulled over a newish small Pug, said car was plastered with stickers saying No Insurance No Car, I guess any passing motorists got the picture, which I fully agree with.... :y :y

Our original van was a little blue Peugeot Partner, custon built, as the Jocks were not part of the fustercluck multienglish force requirement of ACPO, back in the day. We were left to our own devices and able to exchange data between the 8 Scottish forces seperate from (but inclusive of) PNC and able to deliver a much more viable nikkin tool than the Home Office required version....   8)

Last time I saw one, it was an unmarked Mondeo Estate, badly parked I might add, half on the pavement, on a section with double yellows  ??? - Not far from one of those traffic island either, so bit tight for the double deckers.

Anyway, walked past, plod inside watching the TV feed from the camera on the roof pointing backwards.

500 meters up the road, a plod standing there. As I walked passed I said, got an ANPR sting going? He asked if I was in the force to spot it! Not really hard I thought, had a good look as I walked by.

Anywho cars flagged, the copper standing by road, would direct into an area where about 10 coppers were waiting to deal with them.

Quite common around London  :)
