I know little about Vista but have been tasked with sorting a friend of SWTSMBO laptop. Done a full factory reset.. all seemed to go ok... now have a problem.

Wireless is running, connections available it sees my network by the correct name, I select it, type in the password, and it connects. however it then changes to "unidentified network - public" and won't change, access is "local only", connection is "Wireless Network Connection (correct network name)" signal strength excellent.

How do I get it onto the internet ??

Have you got the correct encryption set on the lappy for your network?? and the latest SP for Vista?

I rebuilt a XP PC the other week for a neighbour.....it didnt understand WPA2 encryption until I put SP3 on it .....

Try turning off encryption on your router or hardwire the lappy to see if that gives a clue as to whats wrong

Have you done "IPCONFIG /ALL" to make sure it's getting an ip address?
Also try rebooting your router, I've seen wireless misbehave till the routers been reset before now.

As above, plus get the lastest drivers from the OEM, rather than rely on Vista to update them if its a clean rebuild.

Many thanks for the replies .. eventually narrowed it down by searching numerous forums (forii ?? )...

The factory reset was original Vista with no SP, and going back to 2007, it would appear that this was a very common problem with original Vista.

Solution was to download SP1 & SP2 onto my system, transfer to a memory stick then install on the lappy..... adaptors then started to work and I got the lappy on-line to do all the other (200+) updates needed !!! including driver updates.

Lady has recently collected a fully working, and well protected Laptop ..

Indeed, when rebuilding (or restoring factory images), always manually, immediately install the latest SPs.

For XP, its SP3, and can go on on its own.
Vista is SP2, but you need to install SP1 first
For Win7 its SP1


Win7 without SP1 wifi users will see a similarish problem where it claims to be working, but won't do SMB traffic.  If this happens, and you dont want to service pack it (you should!!), delete all the extra 6to4 network adapters (these are hidden, so you need to show hidden devices), and reboot.

Ooooh, you got me thinking now. XP is so long in the tooth, don't often install it, and when I do, I use a slipstreamed disk.  That said, I do with Win7 as well (well, not slipstreamed, as thats not possible, but an MS supplied disk with all the images updated to SP1 level).
