One of the easy ways to check compability is the paperclip test.
If you can do it, then you probably have the Motronic 2.8.1 chip and that is upgradeable.
I will put my full recommendation behind this chip. I was well impressed in the Elite I had.

Get one, you WILL be pleased you did.
I noticed a significant improvement in initial pull off, and when "exploring" the higher areas of the rev range!

Drive sensibly and you will see fuel economy improve (but be realistic with expectations). Mine went up by 2-3mpg when I drove sensibly.... however for the first few weeks I didn't and the economy was not good!

Oh, and the service was excellent too.
I had the chip fitted for some 12,000 miles (up to when I sold the car) and I never experienced any problems (attributable to the chip anyway!

I did find one weird thing though. If I left the ignition on for a couple of seconds before starting, I got the EM light on and a fault code stored.
It was a code 55. ECU fault. Clearly something else was looking for an identifier it could not find.
However, if you just turned the engine straight on.... no fault code!
Never caused a single problem, so it never bothered me.
