electric seat fuse keeps blowing
« on: 15 May 2012, 11:00:23 »

Hi,
Fuses will blow immediately on being put into the socket. If I operate the adjustment switches, I can hear relays clicking, but something is shorting the power to the motors. This has come out of the blue, and I can't see any obvious cable damage under the seats. Anyone got any ideas how to trace the fault? It's all very complicated down there.

Is there anything else behind the same fuse? If not, might be jsut a stuck motor, not able to turn and therefore taking all the current available and blow the fuse.

The fuse blows before any of the switches are operated. I'm not sure what you mean, 'behind the same fuse'.

Unplug the motors - does the fuse still blow?

If it does - you may have a trapped / chafed wire or something else at fault that is protected by the same fuse

If not - you may have a jammed motor or mechanism - Coin in runners?

I mean is the fuse also for some other circuit? Cig lighter or similar...?

Assuming you`re blowing fuse #15, unplug the seat heater connection under driver`s seat ;)

No, it's no. 5 fuse, dedicated to adjustment motors.

If it was anything to do with the motors or an obstruction in the rails, surely the fuse would blow only when an adjustment switch is activated. The fact that it goes imediately a new fuse goes into its slot would indicate a short in the wiring somewhere? But I can't see anything untoward under the seats.

Unlikely that any fuse is dedicated to a single item alone !!

According to the wiring diagram, that is the case.
