Replacing engine x30xe autobox question
« on: 16 May 2012, 19:28:10 »

Hi. Due to cambelt failure im replacing the engine in my 95 x30xe estate. Car is automatic. New engine is also x30xe from donor sedan with manual. Im keeping the autobox. Have dismantled everything except the gearbox. My question is if its the best solution to lift the engine and autobox out with the engine crane as one Unit or should i separate the auto box from the engine first? Seems like the best solution to lift engine and box out together, then swap autobox to new engine and lift Them back in together. Would appreciate input from someone more experienced:)

I think I'd remove / refit them together if facilities allow it. :y

Personal preferance but I like engine only, just because I find it more manageable that way. Engine and box together makes a pretty long unit which has to go at a really steep angle and so needs to be lifted higher and a lot of clearance room below, and a lot of manouvering to tilt it/level it up. On the down side doing it my way you are a bit tight for space at the bulk head end so it will be more awkward to bolt up the bell housing

Together IMO the auto box is a heavy bitch of a thing.

Everyone does things differently..but I prefer fitting the gearbox to the engine then drop them in together :y
