These things have seriously plummeted in value 

GrandpaT have decided not to go for a camper now, looking at doing hotels/cottage hire which i think is great for them. Just started looking at something a bit more executive for them to drive around in, nice big comfy auto rather than 406 they have now.

Quite shocked, these were well above 10k last year, serious contender for Omega replacement at these values and falling values.

I like the interior. But as for the outside  It just looks like a passat. Far to dull on the outside.

Mr Tunnie. I really like the Phaeton. They are carved from granite, and will last a lifetime. Sadly they have an image problem, hence their paltry used value. The top model, the W12 LWB cost about £70,000 when new, which is a lot of dosh for a humble VW.

I'd tell the old boy to go for it.......but remember spares will be expensive, and the Phaeton is Huuuuuugggggeeee.

The 3.2 will be sluggish. I believe it crushes the scales to the tune of 2300 Kg.....It's a fat bastard.

Depends what you pay for them - bought mine new for under £30k due to circumstances at a dealership.

Its list price was £46k and it has £5k of extras - I had the pick of the batch of 12 at the time and went for the full spare wheel option, sunroof, reversing camera etc. visually not everyone's cup of tea but it is really well built and the interior is far superior to Mercs at the same price judging from my visit to Mercedes Benz world where the £40 to £50k range interiors were a bit tacky I thought.

Fantastic car to drive with all sorts of toys, 3D sat nav, voice recognition built in bluetooth phone system (read texts), hard disc drive, video, 6 cd, SD card slot, ipod connection, touchscreen everything including suspension adjustment.

You buy one - you keep it. Like the Omega.

It will be 3 years old in December and has been great. Only issue was a recall on water pump which the UK VW dealer managed to mess up and it had to go back in.

The road tax is £460 now, but servicing and insurance are  surprisingly quite low.

Would I be right in thinking that the Phaeton is double-glazed, Mr P?

I think it it is triple glazed - the GP0 and GP1s (basically models from 2003 to 2009) were - mine is a GP2 and I think they did make some cost savings - will check.

.....and has arguably the finset air-con system in the automotive world, I'm informed.

Just got this info from one source - so maybe a question of guilding the lily

"The 'shatterproof' glass is actually laminated, ie two thicknesses of glass with a third thickness of adhesive in the middle, not actually triple glazed, and still not even 'double glazed' like the ads say, which implies an air gap between the two layers of glass."

I reckon that's the one to have,plenty of torque to handle the weight,I reckon the v10 knocker is a bit OTT especially if it goes wrong

Not that thirsty really either in petrol guise according to the spec's on Autotrader - I'd personally plump for the petrol version and look at LPG'ing it given the significant savings over the diesel-engined variants...
