Why do we pay road tax??
« on: 08 April 2008, 17:06:18 »

I don't know about other area's of the country but in Herts and Essex the roads are in an absolutely appalling state, and this includes main roads, country roads and residential roads. On my journey to and from work there are potholes appearing almost daily and all the council do is temporarily fill them and a few days later they're back. It now looks like I've got to pay another visit WIM to have my tracking done yet again because of this.

With the current cost of annual road fund licence and major increases due next year, just what do they do with all the bl00dy tax we pay? >:(

round here they are not bad.... they completed the dualing of the M1 to the M40.

Most rounds around my way, are in good nick.

We also have very clear road signs, unlike in Europe. In my 2 pence is that its worth £185, but not  £450!

With the roads in such a bad state of repair AND the s0dding speed bumps that's exactly what they're doing.

Is that right? I wasn't aware of that. :-? So what do they use the income from the road fund licence them? :-/

Whatever way you look at it, the huge amount of taxes we pay in this country should be sufficient to keep our roads in a decent state of repair.

If i didnt know better i might be thinking that the goverment are desperately trying to raise cash for the billions its gonna cost for the 2012 Olympic games....hence the big road fund licence increase/the new pollution charging zones/and the scrapping of free CC for lpg vehicles in London......of course i am completely wrong  ::)

Approx £45 billion is raised annually through various motoring taxes, of this £9 billion is used on roads, the rest goes to - well your guess is as good as mine.
We put up with it because we are English and don't make a fuss, we queue patiently and put up with appalling service sometimes. Look at the French on Monday, they put the olympic torch out and managed to re-route it, we made a token protest and a scuffle or two. The government know we are all too busy working 55 hours, 6 days a week, or at least I am, and just can't be bothered. Only twice in my memory have we ever protested enough to change things, the poll tax and the fuel strikes. Even the new version of the poll tax, the council tax, has gone up from £37 a month to £101 in my case under these clowns. Winter road treatment is poor, homes for the elderly closed etc. The only change I can see in my home town is that the cars in the Civic Centre staff car park are a lot newer than they used to be, in fact they recently reduced the area for public parking to enlarge the staff car park. More staff but no more services, I can't work it out.

Oh Dear,
A couple of points. Don't include the Poles in the foreigners scrounging category. I was a bit financially embarrased near Xmas, so took a  £5/hr job taking Asda waste packing and stuffing it into compactors. There were plenty Poles there, and they worked their arses off, no slacking, AND walked several miles to get to/from the place.

Where is the dosh going to?. Well, look at the country's earnings. The Government have killed off manufacturing; an engineer discovers something brilliant and they will find a way to kill/supress/destroy it. A new thing being talked about is wave power. Except its not  new, it was discovered in Britain 30 years ago. If you get bored, have a Google for "Salter's Duck", a brilliant way of extracting energy from waves. This was the leader, and the technology is being used in Japan, China, and Portugal, etc. And why is it not being used in the UK ?. I'll let you find out.

Having killed off engineering, the Government's current funding source came from the Banks, those hallowed portals, that produced money out of thin air. Unfortunately many/most banks have been caught with their pants down over the sub-prime lending in the US, so where is the dosh going to come from to run this marvellous country ?. Your guess is as good as mine. I recon a severe tightening of the belt for the voters (us!) but Council spending as normal.

On a lighter note, if you fancy a nice little earner, don't bother holding up banks cause they got no dosh (esp Natwest !). However, each bale of waste cardboard is worth about £2K, and an artic holds about 50 bales...........  Black mask anyone ?
