Also chatting to my friend at work on this.

He has asked if the 2.2 Ecotec engine is a non interference engine ... can anyone confirm this?

Also he has an idea that the water may be coming from the water pump as has been talked about here and that the water is running through the timing belt cover down to the crank shaft pulley which is where the water appears (but to be confirmed) as coming out from behind ... but will know more soon on this ...
Nope

Thanks RobG.

Not to put too fine a point on it ... bugger! :)
Hopefully it`s just the waterpump let go

Looks to me like they didnt specify whether they comp tested the coolant system or the clylinders - obviously a BIG difference between the two.

Sounds like there's a pipe gone pop or the waterpump has failed spectacularly.

Thanks Murph! Hope you're OK.

Yep.

I will post a pic shortly which will also be informative as to a graphical illustration but I plan to remove the timing belt cover this weekend as I guess it will tell us more than looking underneath.

Yes, hopefully.

We really appreciate all your posts guys, we really do!

Here is one I made earlier ... an artists impression of the prob when looking from the top down on a dark evening ...

So it could be water flowing from water pump down the timing belt cover then out of the back of the crank pulley.....

Lets pray its just the pump :)

P.S. Red circle is I am assuming where water pump is and red arrow is water gushing down behind cam belt cover (still assumed at this stage)

P.S.2. Thanks to the unnamed and as yet unaware ebayer whose engine piccy I pinched off ebay just now :)

If the waterpump shaft has broken, then its time for new valves  :'( :'(
When mine went, there was some water loss as the pump front bearing was stuffed.

Sounds like waterpump is a possibility. Trouble is, its cambelt driven, so....  :'(

Strip it down to inspect cam timing and water pump :)

we tried firing the engine tonight and you can see the cogs moving inside the engine when the oil cap was off so timing belt looks still intact but it wont fire...

Didn't read to detail but did the aux belt come off?
I had water pourig the same place as yours on my previous 2.2 petrol.
The pump broke and jammed, belt came off and killed the valves.
8 valves needed to be changed and the head skimmed

Yep, we will be doing this on Sat or Sun - probably Sat.

I guess order will be:

0) disconnect battery
1) loosen alternator
2) take off aux belt
3) remove clippy wire box and wires strapped to top of cam belt cover
4) remove timing belt cover (I have special star spanners)
5) pour water in and prove where it is coming out
6) check timing notches in cogs
7) remove bottom pulley (presumably?)
8 ) remove timing belt
9) remove water pump and examine
10) fit new water pump
11) put timing belt on
12) put aux belt on
13) see if it fires
14) if it fires, run it for a few days then buy new cam belt and tensioners etc and get fitted

if anyone has any other steps or hints we would gratefully receive them - noticed the dvd for £3 so this will be an option after point 13 for correct refitting info

We did the above procedure before on my bro's Carlton dippy when his timing belt snapped on that a few years ago - but Carlton valves were good thankfully - even after belt snapping.

Will keep you posted on events. Many many thanks.

What is the mileage ?. You are supposed to change belt, tensioners and water pump every 40K miles. It is possible the water pump shaft has broken but might still be in place, and the belt has jumped a few teeth, which may stop it firing. I would not tempt fate and avoid turning over until I had checked the timing and anything else. The tensioners seem to pack up before the belt goes. I would get cover off, forget battery or slackening alternator, its really easy and quick to get the cover off a 4 pot, and then look at what you have. Broken bits, water pouring out from where, bits of bearings ?. If all looks OK, turn over until TDC, watching cogs etc and check timing.

Best of luck  :y

Water pump failure imo - had this on a V6 - water pump bearings collapsed and water poured out front of engine as fast as it was put in!   ;)
