Rolex watches
« on: 12 June 2012, 14:46:09 »

Do you have an opinion?

Rolex seem to have the uncanny knack of taking a well designed, and exquisitely engineered £10,000 watch, and then making it look all but identical to the gaudy and garish watches you find at your local petrol station for a tenner. :'( :'(

Perhaps the old adage is true......The only thing worse than a fake rolex is a real one. :y

Being a long time Rolex owner I quite agree Opti - they've become the laughing stock of the horological world. >:( >:(

One can't top the design purity and overall quality of the Patek Philippe however - in my very humble opinion. :-* :-* :-*

Not a fan of Rolex or modern Omega seamasters, really liking some 1950's Seamasters and some 1930/40's Longines Tanques, fairly cheap too!!

Speaking from the poorer end of society. I don't think I have ever seen one. I have never looked for one, never even been interested in one.
I suppose it comes from never being in a position to own one. Possibly also being a tight wad, I would not pay that much even if I could afford it.

Just my opinion of course and good luck to you if that is your interest  :y

Yes, I don't find anything wrong with your position at all Manta, as a matter of fact I seldom wear my watch - nor indeed any other jewellery.

What may seem to be of importantance to some - in terms of material possessions - has long since fallen from my sphere of interest.

There are many other things one should turn one's attention towards (and be concerned about) in this rather disappointing and dispiriting world. :y

It seems most high-end watchmakers are aiming for "footballers' wives" levels of bling these days, sadly. :(

If they aren't too tacky-looking to wear they are just too damn large and, in most cases, both.

Got to agree. Never taken mine off in thirty years except for the odd service, a simple steel Oyster Perpetual Date perfectly engineered watch, style and class, :y :y but as stated they have taken this concept and turned it into a bauble for the style less :( :(

Agreed, Kevin. Wouldn't last five minuted under the bonnet of an Omega. ;D :)

I've got a couple of decent watches but I don't wear them unless I'm going anywhere 'special'. As I never go anywhere, they sit in a drawer gathering dust.

When I say decent, I mean Maurice Lacroix, not Rolex  ;D

although not a fan of expensive watches, I can understand you Opti.. My father when retired go and buy a very expensive watch (some 30 years ago) , probably whole life dreamed of it.. :)

for younger generations watches doesnt mean too much as they are after hand held computers called mobiles with built in watches  ;D

I'm 46 .. and I remember long years ago when I bought myself a G-shock ( a kind of plastic watch that you can dive also) I was so proud  ;D ;D

I'd agree with that.  the trouble is the fashion for complicated watches.  At least Patek has not yet fully fallen into this.

A modern Rolex - the perfect adornment for the driver of a modern Ferrari. ;) ::)
