Like others, AVG has gone bloaty, and a resource hog. Avast nags too much.

For freebie, I'm now an MS Security Essentials man, as someone suggested above.

Used to use AVG but found the same a few years back - have been using Avast without problem for a few years now (don't find Avast nags too much - pops up when updating definitions but this can be disabled) and Zone Alarm firewall.  Malware use Spybot and Malwarebytes, as well as Hijack This.

Or you can switch to zorin (Linux) and never have to worry (unless you do some of the work that I do)

Switched my main machine and my laptops over from windows and found it is faster on Linux and the install was no more complicated than windows.  Even the technophobe wife gets on OK with it

"Microsoft Security Essentials" is also very good, I run along side AVG. But AVG is getting troublesome.

Running 2 or more AV solutions simultaneously will simply bog the machine down.

Still a standard HDD, so the access times when the disk is being scanned (twice over as you have 2 lots of AV software running) aren't going to change no matter how fast the rest of the hardware is.
The possibility of a conflict arising if both the real time monitors decide to scan the same file at the same time is also greatly increased.

Indeed. Disk I/O is the most significant bottle-neck in any PC. Best not to thrash it any more than is necessary. Besides, most AV software loads the CPU quite badly too, and lengthens the boot time (or at least the time before a newly-booted PC can actually keep up with my typing!) significantly.

When I'm forced to use a Windows machine at all, Microsoft security essentials does the job. Doesn't constantly pester me nor load the machine up noticeably.

I only use AV when running Backtrack or when playing with rootkits on one of my victim machines just in case I get a bit of the code wrong

stick it in auto update mode and switch off the popups unless a virus is detected

Try Avast free I find it far better than AVG free

OK as this has come back to the top. I did say "the basic spec of my machine" My C drive is a 10,000 rpm disk. And I did uninstall AVG to try it. On my slower laptops it has made a difference. On my desktop no change at all.
