Oil leak. Where do I start?
« on: 25 June 2012, 17:59:55 »

Hi guys, hope you're all well.

Every time I stop and park up and come back to the car there is a small puddle of oil on the road/drive. I haven't had a chance to get under and search for leaks yet but the puddle develops round the back of the engine. Is there any common oil leaks from round the back of the engine?

As said there is not masses of oil.... just a little puddle. does the fact that its not pissin out indicate it may be something as simple as a loose oil filter?

cheers.

Fairly , wouldnt go rushing into thinking that its that right away though ...would need investigating , check your oil filter , dipstick base , atf pipe porous ...cant think of anymore just now . Clean all the oil off and then see if you can pinpoint it  :y If i ever get oil leaks i put some cardboard under the car overnight then trace it upwards  :y

Webby,   have got "the oil leak from Hell" myself at the moment.  My advice as to help tracing it would be  to get the front of the car  safely up on ramps .

you can then get underneath much easier & with an inspection lamp to assist vision, use clean rags wipe away all exisiting oil . Then run the car up & have a good close look all round underneath.

I've been searching for my leak for 3 weeks & it now seems to be one of the oil cooler unions in the v of the engine. it was looking to me like a cam cover leak to start with .

See if theres any oil running or dripping down the 2 oil cooler pipes as they  come down & bolt to the block to just above the oil filter.

on mine it is dripping from these pipes onto the block /bellhousing area & then down onto the floor.

Safety first don't get under the car when on ramps by yourself . have someone else out there with you ;) ;) sure you know that though :y

Safest bet first would be to find a exhaust place that isn,t very busy, say mid morning on a week day.

Go in on the pretext of an exhaust blow and when the guys comes back out to ask you to see what he has found ..as he is bound to tell you your exhaust is blowing... have a good loook around whilst up in the air.Probably worth dropping him a £5 and see if he will get the inspection light out too for a better look.

Car will be nice and hot so should be able to see if and wher it is leaking ...then you are better prepared when you have less access on ramps/stands but know wher it is leaking from.

ps, it seems like it's going to be one of those months.

i checked the pads and discs last night as the warning came up. front discs are on 30mm (minimum according to haynes is 25mm) and pads are at 9mm and minimum is 8mm.

will these last another week at these levels?

just had the shocks n springs done, this oil leak, the alignment, the brakes. what next this month  ::)

Tc disc pad set about £100 these days.

Oil leak, needs a look first as said, could be a number if things from loose oil filter, to leak in the v or cam covers running down, back of the sump... To rear crank seal which is gear box off job.

Could it be ATF? Redish black colour thiner than oil...?
