Aah, that's sad news indeed.

He was, without doubt, one of our great performers and writers from a time when the end results of their labour emerged from the quality of the material and the exquisite timing of the acting – no need for special effects or brash displays to convey the message just cleverness, expertise and a genuine love of the craft.

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live on many occasions and always found the experience to be both rewarding and worthwhile.

The Man was a genius.

I remember talking with Denis Norden in the posh Chemist at the top of Tottenham Court Road about Eric (as you do!) They shared a flat many moons ago and he said that Eric was someone who made him laugh constantly and it was all effortless humour.

He was a subtle comic and his timing was what made him a genius for me.

As some one said already, we shall not see the likes of him again.

RIP Mr Sykes :'(
