Coolant "AGAIN" !!
« on: 08 July 2012, 13:23:46 »

Right. I have resealed the oil cooler which was leaking. I have replaced the matrix pipes which were pissing out coolant.

Still, the rather thing looses coolant. This time Lincoln to Sheffield equals one tank of coolant.

Help !!!

Firstly the oil cooler plate. Then the matrix hoses.

Both repaired/replaced  :y

No obvious signs. I am very frustrated with it. P

Think you really need to get the top end stripped down and then get some pressure into a cold sytem via a hand pump and coolant cap.

Loosing that amount should become quite evident when you have a steady pressure applied.

Recheck the matrix hose connections. They can appear to be fully home when they arent. Aprt from that - wot he said ^

I may have a breakthrough with this. Or at least something to give you guys a clue....

When I travelled to Sheffield, I had the heater on at 25 deg. It emptied the coolant tank and their was a whiff of coolant in the cab.
When I travelled back from Sheffield, I had the air con on low. Nice and cool in the cab. However the car didn't use a drop on the return journey.

Incidentally, the drivers side carpet is dry so I don't think it is the heater matrix.

I am determined to get to the bottom of this and with your help I will  :y

+2 HBV....why do these things leak some much.??

I was under the impression that the vacuum diaphram in the hbv was either open or closed. If you had the temp on HI it would allow coolant to flow through the HBV and then into and out of the heater matrix. If it was on any other temp setting ..Digital number it would be shut and no coolant would flow through the matrix.

Only thing I couldn,t get my head around was how did it control the temperature then from less than HI to more than LOW ..if that makes sense :o

IIRC the HBV is even simpler than quoted above ... :(

I seem to remember 2Woody saying that it was always open - ie sending fluid to the heater matrix - unless and until you set the aircon to LO on at least one side, at which point it shuts and goes into bypass mode...

Now I might have that all wrong ... senility is setting in ... but I'm sure thats what he said ..... ?

That seems to make more sense really as if it is passing coolant through it all the time..except when on LOW.

Damn thing seems to be the real "weak link" in the coolant system ,as only sure way to ensure it doesnt leak is have temp on LO on all the time then  :D

After reading up on it it does sound like its failed. Question is, how on earth can all these parts fail one after the other. Its like a domino effect. I suppose there can't be much left to change  ;D

Another trip to Vx tomorrow. Any idea of price chaps. Don't want to feint at the counter  ;D  :y
