Wanted, steering idler
« on: 15 July 2012, 22:55:01 »

Cant post in the for sale wanted section yet (newbie), has anyone got a spare steering idler, not tried swapping yet as car tramlines badly  :(, I have tried seeing if there is play in the idler and there is a small amount a a slight knock when pulling downwards. new lemforders are £45 so a bit pricey to buy as I am not sure it will cure the fault.

There is a technique to it. Involves shock. I short but very sharp wack with a small to medium size hammer, while pulling pressure is applied.

Iirc there's a video in the guide, I think.

Tried changing the wishbones, no difference, still steers itself!, seems to follow cambers badly, steers itself without the steering wheel moving

You should be able to see play in the idler quite easily, particularily if you get someone to wiggle the steering wheel while your under the car looking at the idler. Its one of the parts which isnt worth skimping on tbh.I tried a cheap abay version last year and the car failed the MOT on play in the idler the day after it was fitted.
Genuine GM or Lemforder is the only way to go imo.
