Reversing Sensors
« on: 18 July 2012, 12:42:30 »

Hi
My elite estate has parking sensors which are great, but when reversing with caravan they sound constantly (as they should)
However is their anyway to "turn" them off when towing?

Iirc theres a fuse somehwere near the spare wheel wheel that you could pull,or fit a simple inline switch to the wiring in the same area ?

On the estate, the fuse is inline right next the the control unit, which is located behind the near side panel in the boot.  Easiest way to get good access is to drop the Bose sub out of the way (2 screws).

The power feed comes from the reversing light circuit (Black/White wire), and can be traced forward to the big loom connector behind the near side kick panel (just by where the front passenger's left foot would be).  You could run a switch in-line from the wire, or preferably do it properly using a relay.

If you want to be really trick, you could use the towbar wiring to do this.  IIRC there is the functionality on a twin electrics setup, to switch off the car's brake lights when the caravan is connected, to prevent glare from the front of the caravan.  I would imagine it would be fairly straight forward to adapt this to kill the parking sensors too...

I've just got the 3 mirror type reverse sensors on my Omega so have never looked down this route, but I'm sure I've seen stuff on the web to discopnnect the reverse sensors electrically when reverse is selected when the caravan is connected. My car's rear fog lights are wired via a microswitch in the 13 pin socket to turn them off when the caravan is plugged in.

My new car has a button on the dash to turn both front & rear sensors off.  :y :y

Oh AndyP. A spelling error, and you've bought a car with reversing AND front parking sensors. See I prefer the looking out the windscreen parking system. Much more accurate. ;D

But yes, remove purple resister that looks like a fuse in the park pilot wiring.

More 'fat finger syndrome'  ;) ;)

I'll let you have a go at Newent, it's worse than the Omega for guessing where the front or back is.  ;) ;)

have looked at this and it would seem the easiest way to sort would be to fit a switch.
Therefore has anybody got or know where i can get a switch that fits into one of the blanks on the bottom of the center console?
Thanks
