It's amazing how we've got our heads around using PPE these days. When I was an apprentice, nobody bothered with glasses/goggles, ear defenders or gloves, the only time were were encouraged to use eye protection was when were were machining brass.

Angle grindeers are throwing shards everywhere. I'm a bit gun-ho with safety, but even I wear them. I wear gloves, as post ground metal can be a tad warm ;D

Years ago I worked as a fettler in a foundry for several years.Even with the best eye protection available at the time I would get  metal fragment in one of my eyes on average around 6 times per year.
We had a first aider who had a sharp magnetic length of metal with which he would try and remove them (wouldnt be allowed these days) and if he wasnt succesful it was down the doctors, and if he couldnt shift it ,down the local eye hospital.
I can remember trying to drive home from the doctors surgery one day after having both eyes "numbed" to remove bits from both of them. It was only a quarter of a mile, but I was driving almost blind. ;D
Anyway,I know how it feels Bigyin, and it really isnt nice. Will probably take a few days to settle down. ;)

Been there, done that, not pleasant! ::) Speedy recovery :y

Must admit, I've done some pretty stupid things with grinders and welders but do tend to wear eye protection (now :-X) ::) Not gay enough for gauntlets when grinding though :-X :P

I think my most stupid things are probably welding using sunglasses instead of a mask and also welding in a fleece ::)

You haven't liked until you've welding in a fleece. Or in just a t-shirt ::)

As for gauntlets, more than once I've had to grab what I'm grinding in an emergency. It is warm.  Also helps with sharp edges, as I can be a bit gay with the sight of my own blood ;D

Is that a Freudian Facebook slip :-X ;D

Yep, just a t-shirt isn't exactly bright either, although you do get a nice tan ::)

I do try to stick a bit of rag nearby when grinding, just in case, but have grabbed whatever I'm working on far too many times ::)

Last time I was grinding something on the driveway, I had the mains lead between my legs. I felt like I'd pissed myself - warm and damp, and the lead was pulling. Turned out the neighbours dog was behind me, with his nose up my tackle ;D

Got to admit I was in the "it won't happen to me / can't be arsed / goggles are for girls" club until a few years ago.
Chopping out a backbox and a piece of brick jumped up and hit my eyelid and split it open  :-[ :'(

I treat it as a sign and won't touch one unless I have a full face screen on (they don't mist up)

You wally! ;D

Why risk sight and ability to earn a living for the sake of two seconds and a pair of bins? Or what ever else is appropriate for the job in hand.

Hope it's not serious. ;)
