Anyone interested in Metal etc detecting?
« on: 07 August 2012, 20:16:12 »

I am thinking of getting my first metal detector partly to find a lost ring, that isn't insured,  in a UK garden (long story) and partly to use to find some hidden Roman gold coin hoards here in Spain. They could supplement my meagre income. :o

I don't want to spend too much- maybe £80 to £100 and I am looking for advice on models or types to go for. The ground will always be dry and stoney. I guess the adage you get what you pay for applies here as well. Seben machines have caught my eye.

Be careful mate, highly illegal out here!!
precisely because there is so much conquistador and bandito gold lying around the countryside!!

in my garden is a huge rock shaped like an arrow head, aprox 7ft tall, it has 3 straight lines cut onto it on the face, presumably so they could find it again, and the topmost edges have handcut grooves in them for a rope to grab on,grooves and cuts are extremely old and weathered, we know there is a cave behind it, but it must weigh 3 tons, and i dont have a big horse to pull it out!! lol however there must be 20tons of rock leaning on the edge of it so have decided it can stay there,
literally 1 kilometer away is the museum(venta) of the most famous bandito in spain, in fact its his old house, it still has the cell he was kept in after capture, including his leg manacles and irons, and the floor is made up of upturned on there edge pebbles, so walking on it was nearly impossible in trainers never mind barefeet!!dates from the 1300 i think :y

That will be El Tempranillo. I have one of his treasure maps too.

hmm Might have to be careful when and where i use a detector then and get the Mother in Law to dig anything up.

I quite liked the OKM Rover that looks like a walking stick. Discounted it on price. If I could afford one I wouldn't need to be finding treasure..................

El Tempranillo

I would be more inclined to treasure the product made from the grapes rather than seek the remains of his treasure. :-* :-*

You wont get much of a new detector for £100 tbh. reasonably useable machines tend to start at around the £350 mark ime.If just looking for a ring in a garden it may be worth contacting a local club and asking if one of their members would like the challenge of trying to find it,although a small reward may be expected if they do.
The problem with cheap detectors is that they will pick up everything, from silver paper to gold bars,so your forever digging to find out what the signal is.Even cheapish discriminators can be more hassle than they are worth, giving false readings etc.
If you really want to get one,it may be better to buy a used one so you get more spec for your money, but get some kind of warranty if you can in case it transpires that its not working quite as it should. For a beginner it might actually take a while to work out whether or not its doing everything it should.
Not that I have much experience tbh,but FIL has been doing it for 40 years, and is apparently spoken of in quite reverence in detecting circles round these parts.
